The new hayride ride

We had our church's annual soup supper/hayride/game night at our place again last night (after having it canceled last year). Since I sold my all hay equipment a couple years ago, I had to come up with a new hay rack. I added some low sides to my 5th wheel flatbed trailer. I even added some lights for after dark rides. Perfect weather, beautiful sunset, bright 3/4 moon, good soup and desserts, the wind died down for the perfect bonfire. We made five trips down to the river bottom where we checked out the eagle nest where our pair raised two eaglets this year. The last two trips after the sun set I could have used an extra jacket but what a great night! Life is good in the neighborhood!

Really nice!
I have enjoyed hayrides ever since I was in 8th grade (1957) and my dad pulled two wagons with our Farmall H. My son and I built a special wagon just for hayrides. But, we have missed the last 3 years for various reasons. Our last one that we (wife and I) sponsored, we had about 80 people and used 2 Ford tractors, each with a wagon. Family oriented with potluck food and BYOB sitting around a nice fire.
Won't get one this year either. GRRRR.

Have done a few hayrides. Lights and strobes and reflectors all over the equipment. Still I didn't feel safe. Liability could be pretty great. Decided to give it up. Wife was an ER nurse on duty the night a dunk driving a Suburban hit a couple wagon loads of college kids. All local hospitals and ambulances were swamped. Some very serious injuries. If I remember the horses had to be put down. Seems all they had on the back of the last wagon was a lantern which got knocked off by a drunken frat guy. Not worth the risk.

One of my teachers when I was in school had a bad limp, wore a big platform shoe, due to a hayride injury when he was a teenager. We stay off the road. We have a one mile lane along the west edge of the farm that goes down to the river. Perfect for our hayrides.

Barney apparently doesn't know where I live. If he did I would've been locked up long ago. LOL Not to worry though, my wife plays a pretty good Barney, keeping me safe. That kindergarten teacher can see danger long before it happens.

I agree with you on the risk. The last ones we sponsored stayed mostly on private property. We did cross the road to the neighbors property. He and I had mowed trails around the perimeters.
We also established safety rules on the wagons. Violators would be removed. Never happened.
