Howdy all,
In serious need for a 3 pt. Post Hole Auger. Finally have the money to buy a good one... don't like the neighbors, but he's been kind to share it over the years.
Appreciate any recommendations or warnings.
Will mate to a 40 ish HP JD 1070, cat. 1 3 pt.... I currently own a 12 and 14 inch auger
I value your opinions and lessons learned.

TIA, Fr. Bob

Buy a heavy one. No light duty. And get extensions stems for the augers. If you dig a hole, you might as well dig one extra deep so you don't have to clean out some of the dirt by hand that always falls back into the hole after digging it.

If you cant tell the difference between the way things are
made you havent made it passed the first week of class in the
barnyard engineering course

Ok, so how many holes are you going to drill? How difficult will it be to drill in your dirt? How big a hole are you going to need? What is your budget? All these should be considered in how heavy duty you need to buy.

Best advice I can give, is to use the money to rent or buy a skid steer with PHD. They are faster, straighter, cleaner holes, reverse if you hit a rock or wet clay, up & down pressure, on the dig corrections to keep the hole plumb, and the work is in front of you. After operating a skid steer PHD, I am very unlikely to ever use a 3pt PHD again. They really are that much better.

Ray,
immediately, about 20 holes... fences and grape arbors. however, I have a small farm, so in the future, about 27,000 holes ( or at least it seems like it ).
I understand and agree about the skid steer style, but I don't see myself going down that road. I'd rent a unit if that was necessary.
Was more interested in good, bad, ugly brands, etc. Different attachment styles, gear boxes, etc.
I was already thinking extension for auger, but figgered I'd wait until I have a unit in hand.
I have GREAT soil, nary a rock for a hunnert miles.
Hoping to hear more personal experiences.

I have a Ford 903 run it on my 3020 and 4020 ive had a 4440 with loader pushing down on it to drill through hard ground more than once . Holes are easy fo keep straight watch what you need to do then pull ahead or back while holding the brake that will move the auger where you want it
Ford 903

Mine is a TSC post hole digger. Probably a low to mid level tool. Has done probably hundreds of holes here. Have hit numerous rocks in my sandy and clay soil. never did any damage. One of my tractors has down pressure, but not neccessary, as it will pull itself down. I am careful not to abuse it, and run tractor at almost an idle. If i was doing hundreds of holes yearly, I would recommend a heavy duty model. In my case, I get by with a cheaper unit.

I have an older Ford 903. It works great. Only drawback is the output shaft of the gear box is larger than the normal one now. You have to get an adapter for the common size augers. All the new ones are about the same design with one curved pipe as the structure. I weld a 2" diameter section of pipe near the gear box so weight can be added. Makes them dig lots better.

Too far to ship cost wise. If you have a friend driving west out I-90 I am only a half mile off that on good exit.

41B-boy, Get a Danhauser PHD as they are Pretty Heavy Duty. I've had one for years with a 16"auger and a 12"auger,drilled thousands of holes putting up fence and maybe a hundred or so pole barns with the 16" auger. With never a problem, one tough digger.

Yes hydraulic. They will reverse.
Hang on bucket, 3 pt or what you have. Tracked skid steer would be good. I dream of mini excavator.

The other nice thing about the ford is the way the frame is set up you can run a long pole or pipe through it and hang off it to get it go in hard ground thats what I really liked about it before I had 2 loaders

Found the adapter on All States Ag Parts web page. Item 162889. $110 now.
