Used Hydraulic fluid

Other than running it to the local oil recycler, are there any uses around the farm for used hydraulic oil? I keep some used motor oil around for lubing various chains, etc, but is used hydraulic oil good for anything?

I used to use it for flushing the crankcase of an old tractor that was new to me, have done many times, I think it is much safer and easier to use than kerosene or diesel fuel.

Isn't hyd. oil the same as SAE 10 motor oil but with an anti-foaming agent? Why can't you us use it like used motor oil?

I use old hydraulic oil as bar oil in chainsaw. Run it through a fine screen funnel and never had any problems with it. Steve

I mix it with chain oil for cold weather use, I don't feel its heavy enough or sticky enough by it's self, but with roller nose bars it might be fine. When I started using chain saws no one had sprocket nose bars so the oil had to be heavy and sticky.

The defoaming agent in hydraulic oil is highly nephrotoxic
if ingested. Cattle seem to crave the oil if left unattended or if they drink from runoff of a highly contaminated work area.

I bought a 5 gallon pail of Mobil hydraulic fluid a couple of years ago, really inexpensive after rebate, planning on using in our JD 4600. But after doing more research, I don't think I dare use it, as JD recommends low-vis. My father had trouble with his JD 350 crawler in the winter because he was using too heavy an hydraulic oil. I was wondering about using it my air compressor? it's supposed to have an anti-foam, about the correct wt, non detergent, it should be OK?

I use it to oil up equipment. I have a gallon jug and a siphon blow gun for my air compressor. I spray the corn planters, forage harvesters, baler knotters and inside of bale case, my fetlizer wagon and the inside of augers and much of my tillage equipment before storing for the winter. It does make a little more dust stick to them the following year but they get a power washing anyway. Tom

If the DEP isn't looking you can oil your dusty driveways. Tongue in cheek suggestion as the older generation did this but we don't do it anymore.

I mix a little bit of gas with it and use it in my burn barrel for those trash bags that draw moisture and are hard to burn

I just dump it in with the rest of the used oil then use it to oil wagon wood and chains if real clean it gets used in squirt cans.
