How do they de-hull oats?

Anybody know how they get the kernel out of the oat hull to process it into oatmeal, coco puffs, etc? I don't think the hulls come off willingly. steve

with a de huller. it is a round disc that is spinning and has indents. It throws the oats against a ceramic side with force and that is what knocks the hull off. It gets cleaned and goes through again. My cousin's I think goes through 4 X before it is 90 something percent hulled. Kind of interesting to go see how simple it is. He had the local machine shop build almost all of them and he just bought the ceramic plates. They use ceramic as metal would were through to quick. I never thought there would be that much abrasion from throwing oats but it does

Would the hulls be good for fiber. I have to pay ten dollars for 12 oz of psyllium hulls!

That makes a lot of sense, since the kernel is so much more dense than the hull. Some kind of air separator further on in the process?

Oat hulls would be an excellent source of fiber.
