Ford New Holland 7740 SLE PTO problem

Im looking at a Ford New Holland 7740 SLE that the PTO is not working on. Was told that the switch was replaced and worked for a little bit, but the next day it wouldnt come on. Sounds like electrical to me, but wanted to hear other opinions and experiences. I may be wrong, but from what I understand there is a pump that runs the pto and power steering? Some of the gears are hard to get in, feels like a linkage issue maybe. Other than that it is a nice tractor for its age. Doesnt look it has been abused, but not in showroom mint condition either. Thanks.

There are at least 3 transmission types that could be in that tractor. We put a clutch in one two weeks ago. It was a 12x12 manual shuttle with a hydraulic throw out bearing that exploded. PTO problem could be Hydraulic or electrical or Mechanical. Trying to guess what is wrong with these newer tractors without the proper diagnostic tools is like rolling the dice, sometimes you win but most of the time you loose. A Dyno, an ohm meter, a pressure gauge or two and a real good service manual will get you started. Other than that I'm sorry, it's is hard to tell without the tractor.

Thanks for the reply. Thats about what I figured. Its got the 16x16 transmission in it. I wasnt sure if there may be something that would narrow it down a little bit right off. Thanks again

I had an 8240 SLE. At around 5000 hours it suddenly would not move. Using the onboard diagnostics following the IT manual myself revealed a leaking transmission clutch pack seal. I took it to the dealer and their computer verified the seal problem. It needed a new transmission for $5,400. The following year the PTO would not engage. it turned out to be a small tube that the hydraulic fluid pressurizes to pressurize the clutch pack. The FWA would engage by itself. which turned out to be an electric solenoid valve on the right side of the transmission. At this point I sold it with full disclosure. Immediately after replacing the FWA valve the new owner had to replace the electric hydraulic dump valve on the transmission. Neither of these solenoid valves were available but he was able to get them used. I had 9 good years out of it before these problems, and after replacing the two valves the next owner had three good years before he sold it. Prior to the hydraulic problem with the PTO it would quit due to a relay over heating. This would happen a little while after the AC would quit.
