More horsepower in tractor

Looking to get a little more horsepower out of our 1600 Oliver we pull occasionally for fun and like to see if we could get a little more horsepower out of her a little more torque we pull in the 8500 and the 10500.
 
Yea BUT , Horse power costs MONEY . On that there is no two ways about it , Cubic inch increase , Cam shaft upgrade Compression up grade carb or injection pump changes , Head work bigger intake valves on Gas engines C C ing of the heads matching the manifolds to the intake and exhaust. Flowing the heads . On not turbo diesels getting more air in more fuel and sometimes over looked is balancing all rotating members . In my life time i have built mild to wild for the drag strips to the pulling tracks , Not a bunch but what i have built are out the gate winners . The one i am most proud of was my dumpster dive special and other then rings , bearing and Gskt. came out of DUMPSTERS . My accountant and i ( he put the bucks up ) and i made it happen . We started with a JUNK M M U with internal busted block from water freezing in the bores . As they were they were only good for a boat anchor . while setting around talking and yes ofcourse having some adult beverages and with the aid of procession measuring devices ( a Stanley 16 foot tape massure ) And some math . we figured that we could expand the 330 CU. in . up a bit. IF we bored the busted blocks OUT . I had a close friend that was Service manager at the local Cummins dealer and i needed sleeves . Bobby let me get 6 Cummins 855 sleeves that they just threw away for Free . Next stop was down to Chad's and had him turn the outside of the sleeves down and BORE the junk blocks so the Cummins sleeves would fit and make them a press fit . nEXT STEP WAS TO CLEAN UP THE INSIDES . And make the 5.500 to 5.560 . The next step was to add and inch of stroke to the crank and a trip to the west side on Indiana for that and also had the cam built up and reground . Next stop was to another friends tractor junk yard for four Farmall rods . Next was a call to a guy that played with Allison aircraft engines and we got 6 .060 over allison pistons two for spars just incase. . Next up was heads , need heads My account knew a guy that knew a guy that had M M heads and he sent us two . NoW some extensive head work needed done so back to Chad's and we got that done with Huge intakes from and unstyled J D , valve springs were found in the Progressive size chart of engine parts . The crank came back with and inch longer stroke with the regrind that we now needed .030 under M M mains and >030 under Farmall M rod bearings . For a carb here again it was off to a Military Surplus yard and we got two new Bendix updrafts incase my first attempt did not work out The carb had a 3 inch in and a 3 inch out updraft . Now we needed a BIG intake and what we found needed some shell we say UP GRADES . I had to cut the manifold and make up a carb mount that would take the 3 inch carb and still lock somewhat stock. When done we ended up with 609 Cubic inch and as for Horse power i can not give you that as the dyno we ran it on only went to 250 and we could not even slow it down but did lift the one tire off the ground while tryen . Four people ran that tractor at every pull as we ran 45-7500 Lbs and over two years it was NEVER beat . NoW for the good part dollar wise including the cost of the tractor we had less then 3500 in it . Depending on tracks 4500 and 5500 could be run in ROAD GEAR 6500 and 7500 forth gear . Next up was a M M G B Diesel and it was a runner that my accountant built for the low end of nothing . Then a 705 M M and the 101 Massy senior for a 14 year old kid that on his first pull took it out the gate and made for a vary long pulling season for the rest . Built a 706 gasser for a close friend that he farmed with along with dead weight pulling and from 8500 on up thru 14500 it won them all and Donny has the trophy to prove that and i have like six from that tractor when i ran it . Another buddy and i had a 1650 oilver that we played with and on that one we got a little to goofy , you could stick your hand in #1 hold and go all the way back to #6 and never touch nothing when the sleeves were out and yes it held water , BUT we were always looking for more . It did well with the updraft carb, BUT we wanted more and that is when things got crazy with the addition of the Four bbl. intake that went into a TO 4 turbo and the onset of AL-KI -HOL . Had problems keeping the head on , once that was solved and wanting more next was keeping the crank in . Ya never lived till ya throw the crank out on the ground 3/4's the way down the track at 6 grand in road gear.
 


First, gas or diesel? Huge difference in answer. Second, in order to have more power relative to the competition, the easiest and cheapest thing to do is to pull against lighter tractors. You should shoot for the 7500 lb class.
 
A 310 will bolt right in, like from an 1850-1855, gas of course. The 1850 diesel was a Perkins and won't work.
