Cub mini alternator more

Hooked a wire from vertical spade to the + side of coil..... nearest hot wire. Alternator is charging now. Amp gauge goes slightly to discharge when I crank it up then goes way over to charge, after a couple minutes it starts coming back to the middle.... sound right?

Yes. Make sure there is no drain through that wire (put a volt meter from the wire to the terminal it was connected to. If more than .2 volts there it may need a diode to prevent some drain. Jim

(quoted from post at 20:34:08 07/11/21) We unhook battery cable every night. Should be ok? What does other spade connector do?
xactly what my diagram showed....idiot light to indicate charging (dark) or not charging (a bright fault light). You have ammeter & no need for light.

Other spade is probably the sense wire which tells the V.R. when the battery has a full charge so it slow down the charge to just keep up with the needs of the system

(quoted from post at 20:48:07 07/11/21) So..... leave other spade connector blank? I'm struggling here...lol. Will it over charge??
t is working without the light...so leave it alone, ...unless you want the light?

Where did you get the alternator, looks just like some that our KUBOTAs run. I have never tried making a one wire out of them.

(quoted from post at 21:17:41 07/11/21) Jmor. ....ain't worried about a light!
Just worried it would over charge if not
wired right
e-assure yourself. Just run it awhile and see if ammeter settles near zero.

Hook the other one up to the charge stud like you would do on a Delco .alternator. When I am not sure I take the alternator to have it check and then have them tell me what each hook up does

Get either an incadecent light on that lead, or a diode (numerous articles on line for this). This is the terminal that needs a pulse of juice when you start the tractor to energize the fields, but if you don't do one of the above, the battery will slowly discharge thru the alternator.

No need to disconnect the battery each night.

(More or less what you have done, except no warning light (which I believe is optional) and it's working, so that would seem to confirm it.

Personally, I would run a separate wire from the ignition switch rather that to the terminal on the coil, which is going to be VERY electrically "noisy" and have voltage spikes that may no be the best for the internal voltage regulator.

A separate wire may eliminate SOME of the spikes and "noise" at the coil.

no need to disconnect battery each night I disagree. Friend of mine had mice build a nest behind the dash and chewed up some wires. They shorted out and caught fire. Luckily it burnt out and didn't damage the tractor too bad. Or worse burn the shop down. Got quick disconnects on every tractor battery. Little insurance, takes a couple seconds....

Sorry to say this, but you didn't buy the right alternator.
Make sure the next one says something like; Alternator 1 Wire Universal Self-Excited.

GP,
Use an ammeter and measure parasitic drain.
Farmall I have to run both small wires on 3 wire alternator through ignition switch.

One terramite, the charging system has a be removed from battery when I turn it off. I use a 30 amp relay. Alternator is only a 15 amp. I use relay instead of removing positive cable.
