Best oil for old diesel with lots of oil coming out blow

I have a 40 year old Yanmar 240D (D as in diesel). A LOT of oil seems to be coming out the blow-by tube, enough that if the tractors is running and stays in one spot for more than a minute or two, there's an oily patch on the ground. I only use it perhaps 20 - 25 hours per year, which means that it's probably a lot cheaper to keep adding oil than to solve the oil loss problem.

I'm looking for advice on what engine oil to use. Really thick oil might reduce oil loss, but the engine might not run all that well!

Any suggestions on a compromise oil that would perhaps reduce oil loss but not cause engine damage or reduce engine performance?

I assume I should be using oil formulated for diesel engines (?)

Thanks.

Put a full synthetic oil of 15-40wt diesel grade from Shell, RPM Delo, Royal Purple, or Mobil. The synthetic keeps the heat related evaporation lower,
and the 40 wt running temp will protect it as much as can be expected. You might hang a can under the draft tube if the drips get on driveways or
decorations.

Mystic 15 50 . Had a big dorf that was burning 1 to a 1.5
gallon a day the mystic slowed it down to 1 gallon every three
days .
15w50

My go to place is RK, harvest king oil.
5w30 or 10w40 all my old gas tractors ,
cars, truck, mowers, terramites.
Kubota and XT5 get dealer service, under
warranty.
After warranty I'll buy recommended OILS
from RK. I think both dealers use
Valvoline. RK sells Valvoline.
$2 qt Harvest King oils.
Not sure who makes HK. Been using it for
many years. Can't say I've had any
mechanical problems using HK oils.

Have you cleaned the vent tube?

Some have baffles inside or ahead of the tube. If they are carboned up and restricted, it will increase the velocity of the air coming out, cause it to carry oil. There may also be internal drain holes that are clogged.

If there is any other vent up top, be sure to clean it also.

One of the very few miracles in a can that work, sometimes,(most do nothing )Lucas.

I had a Dodge Dakota V6 that wouldn't carry oil pressure at idle. I ran 20-w50 and substituted 1 quart Lucas for one quart oil when changing oil. It would carry oil pressure at idle for about 1500 miles and then loose it at idle again. It didn't use much oil, but thickened it up enough to run for several years like that. Check and clean what the other guys told you to and then add some Lucas Oil Treatment to it and see what happens.

What year was your Dakota? I have a 2001 with the V6 engine. I use 10-40 oil. If 10-30 gets put in it drinks oil but not with the 10-40.

Ad 50% lucus with the 15w40 diesel oil to reduce the blowby slightly. Might consider adding an oil separator or catch can.

The cheap stuff. 5 gallon bucket 15/40 fleet diesel from TSC,Walmart, etc. You might try the Lucas as recommended. But,your engine is simply worn out. So no
'miracle cure',snake oil additive is going to work.I have a 400 Farmall like that. I only use it for spraying and sidedressing. basicly any operation that
requires liquid. It burns(and leaks) a gallon of oil a day. Has a blue haze from the exaust. But it doesnt foul plugs(yet). For the limited(seasonal) use it gets, simply not worth
the expence of an overhaul. So the cheap oil is what it gets.

Straight weight Rotella T1 Sae 50 weight . Plus it is a low ash SF-2 additive formula that leaves fewer deposits .
Does not provide enough camshaft/follower protection if the valve spring pressure is high .
