What started out to be a simple project ended being a big mess . A brake job and wheel seals replacement. No one could figure out what axle I have if its not in the compuker you are sunk .

If you ever have the chance to own an international they mustve bought every close out end of year warehouse clean out they could find . I had a 1971 1220-8 and one of the ujoints for it was for a model t ford

It's funny how the manufacturers mixed and matched different vendor parts over the years. I found out once that a steering box from a ford van was a direct bolt on for a chevrolet car. etc. etc.

Advance Auto parts website *used* to have a feature where you could search a part number and it would show every vehicle that part would fit across makes, models and years. I don't think it does that anymore.

The older vehicles I use are made up of parts from ten different ones so..... yeah, you have to simplify things for the counter folks to get what you need.

Well on Saturday I guess you may as well not even try unless you have every duck in perfect line . And I should have done a little more research before I went in but I didnt think it would be that hard . John Deere used to have that search feature for parts as well I think its still on there but I dont know

I owned a couple IH trucks. Good trucks but like you said I don't know if they ever built two alike.

Use to work parts counter ran into this all the time .
Pennsylvania titles a car the year it sold. So Do it yourselfer comes into Ohio store and sayes he needs brakes for a titled 90 Ford F-150 ,the truck is a 91 model f150 . Comes back cussing throwing counter displays on the floor . I drove 30 miles dah dah dah , manager sayes what year is it ? I told a ninety! Anoles, Then his wife sayes honey the trucks 91
Were only as good as what your wifes says when you send her in to get parts for a 350 Chevy there all the same ? Dah dah
This stores are for Do it Yourself , have the right facts when they ask , tell them you got a 82 dodge w 200 with a 1978 w200 front axle if you want wheel u joints. And the transfer case is out of a 80 for propeller shaft u joints .
A do it yourself came in with 2006 dodge caravan said we always give him the wrong brakes for his caravan said look up warranty file and give me what I got before ,cause you never give me the right parts brakes calipers etc. So I look it up as he said . sure enough somebody put 2002 Dodge caravan front brakes and calipers on his 2006 . No wonder he got the wrong parts all the time , wasnt t our fault but he never said he was sorry ,but sure shut up about from then on .
Never send your wife in to do your job or call in for parts it s hilarious.

So look up the seal by dimensions, you show the dimensions except the id so no one can help you find a part number without that

A couple of years after I got married I did a brake job on my wife's car.
She drove a '73 Duster. None of the parts fit. Went back to the counter several times, the last time with the old parts.
Turns out the car was in a wreck and the front chassis was replaced with one from a '72.

We have a 4700 Int. truck. Just forget the auto parts stores for parts. Take the serial # to the nearest Int. place, (no matter how far away it might be) and get the right parts the first time. We have a local parts store guy who is very good with truck parts , but he has no more luck with Int. parts than anyone else.

I found the seals in five minutes wasnt hard . Wasnt looking for help . Just wondering why the parts man cant

Yet the parts man doesnt have enough brains to think outside the box and type in a different and see what comes up ?uh I cant do that

Luckily I had a guy locally who had a mechanic shop and a parts store and actually knew how to use his head for something besides a hat rack

Rock Auto parts tell you the application too. The steering box for my 3/4 ton chevy fits a 1/2 ton Dodge.

I went in I said this is what I have it has 5/8 lug studs uuuuuh we only show 9/16 I said you cant look up a diff Year uuuuuh no so I went home looked it up and wheel seals and lug studs looked up in the time the parts guy spent scratching his a$$

I like the AutoZone guys, even if they're saddled with a parts lookup system that hobbles them. For some reason, they actually try to be helpful, unlike the folks down the street at O'Reilly or Advance who all seem to have an attitude. Often I can look up the part on the AZ website and confirm they have it in stock, but the guys in the store are stuck with looking it up by year/make/model number. So I'll come in and ask for such-and-such Autolite spark plug, and they immediately ask, what's it for?. So I tell them it's a 1964...Ford...4000...tractor. The counter man will stop typing and get a defeated look on his face as I continue row crop...and it's a gas tractor, not diesel or propane. Then they'll invariably say let me go look and then go in the back and start checking out what they have on the shelf.

And when I say guys, of course it's both the guys and gals who work there. I tried to get a set of points once for my tractor, which they supposedly had in stock but couldn't find. (I had to make up a car so they could look it up.) The lady behind the counter tried to be helpful, even though she didn't know what 'ignition points' were. She was quite surprised when I told her it wasn't that long ago that every car on the road had a set of points.

I guess I'm pretty lucky. I use an independent auto parts store that still has the huge rows of parts books right out in plain sight. The kids there get that deer in the headlights look sometimes when I go in and ask for tractor parts, but they're getting better at it. Our local NAPA's store owner will still measure a bearing or cross to find one that fits, but he's the only one that seems to know how to do that. Plus, most of the staff there are miserable. So I don't do much there.

We have an Advance Auto about 25 miles away. Useless if you need parts more for anything more than 10 years old. The big NAPA in that town is good, but there's never anyone there on the counter it seems. Waiting 1/2 an hour for service is ridiculous.

All auto parts stores seem to make a habit of answering the phone while in the middle of making a sale to me! Burns my toast every time!

(quoted from post at 11:54:39 06/20/21) Just wondering why the parts man cant

Because "parts man" isn't a career anymore. Life would be a whole lot better if people just learned to accept that and moved on but apparently they have a need to complain about something.

Parts counter attendant is an entry level, minimum wage job. The computer system is set up the way it is set up because it covers 99.9% of the customers that come in the door, and it's easy to use for an entry-level, minimum wage worker.

The job attracts the quality people that an entry level minimum wage job attracts. If the person is smart, catches on quickly, works hard, they move on to bigger and better in no time. "That girl that used to be here that was so great" is now working as a teller at the bank for $5/hr more.

Better one yet. Local JD dealer had a parts counter person who didn't know tractors. It Got so bad I would take the part numbers in and he would order the parts. Well one day I am waiting to give him my order and he is trying to look up parts for another person. He gives up and says will you help this guy out. So I have to go and look up the parts for the customer. They didn't even give me an employee discount LOL

I called the John Deere store on Saturday one time I was so mad I coulda choked someone . Ive had to look up my own parts at fiat a few times . I usually just look up the part numbers and save myself the grief the anger and rise in blood pressure but sometimes I get lazy

I went in to get wheel seals today part numbers in hand lug studs parts numbers in hand and spindle nuts parts numbers in hand saved me a lot of Aggravation . Should have done that in the first place but I didnt realize i was asking for someone to actually use their brain i should have used mine and not tried to depend on anyone but myself .
