660 Ford wiring harness

Just installed new wiring harness on my 660 Ford and the tractor wont start with the push button. I can take the wire off the push button and touch it the the positive side of the battery and it starts right up. What is my problem? Also the resistor gets really hot quick, is it supposed to?

Wrong type of solenoid or you ave it hooked up backwards as in switch the 2 heavy cables. As for the resister getting hot that is normal and they get hot enough to burn your fingers

I ordered my wiring harness from this site, key switch, resistor and wired it exactly like my 661 is wired. I parked my 661 beside it and did it just like the 661. After a few minutes I noticed that the wires in the harness were melting together near the end close to the end of the harness with the key switch on. Something must be wrong???

Yes you can use a true 12 volt coil that says on it no external resister needed. When I wire up a tractor I do so by buying wire and then wiring it up but I was a Navy E.T. and also a TV repair man and many other jobs that had me wiring things up even houses. So wiring is easy for me most of the time.

Wires cam be correctly installed but one of the tractor components could be bad. This could include internally shorted parts. If the original wiring was working just fine, maybe the install needs to be inspected. If the original was burnt, it was likely not the wires that were responsible, but burnt from the same issue. If the new harness is melted into slag, the repair may be to get a new one, and try again. Looking at the most melted wire and what it supplies/connects to and from is critical in not having it happen twice. Before hooking up the last non-grounded battery cable, put a simple test light (as linked) from that battery terminal, to the cable clamp that attaches to it. With everything turned off, the light should be off. If it is on, something is either turned on, or shorted to ground. Jim
