Storm damage

I did a tour of the yard this morning to check out the tree damage from last night's freezing rain. Amazing how heavy a layer of ice can make a tree. I saw one spruce bent right over to touch the ground. Many maple branches snapped right off as well as some carragana and chinese elms. Its going to more than a day's work cleaning all that up. More like a summer project. Recorded some video of it for those that are interested.

Ice Damaged Trees

(quoted from post at 14:31:52 05/21/21) Wow rusty, where are you located?
Southeast Saskatchewan. Its not unheard of to get snow or ice in May but does not happen too often.
Bruce, we had that same heat here earlier this week. High 80s and I was complaining about the heat. Now we have the other extreme.

It's pretty weird out here. My lawn has already started to 'brown out' - normal end of June to mid July. I have a shallow (dug) well and just finished filling my 3- 2000 gal plastic tanks. The well has gone dry (or at least below the pickup) in the past. The problem is we don't normally go on the tanks until the end of July into August. My pond (an indicator of well level) is going down in a scary way. We know how to conserve and average (in the summer) 35 gal. of water per day for 2 people - no skimping except for toilet flushing (low flow). We'll see.

Wow I am sorry to see that ice damage. We had a situation here 10 or so years ago where we had an early spring and trees were mostly leafed out and we had 10 of very heavy wet snow. It did similar tree damage. Now with the late cold springs we have here at least that is less of a possibility. I enjoy your videos as I can learn about your area , it seems like you can have some extreme weather fluctuations even more than here in Central NY.State.

We had a thunder not sure how much it put down I know it didnt stop spud planting . We cant buy a decent storm .

That band of moisture was supposed to wrap around and give us some rain, but it didn't amount to anything. Dry as a bone here in eastern WA

Remember the ice storm in upstate NY that was so bad it even took down the whole electric grid including high tension distribution lines?

Jan. 1998. We were without power here for 3 weeks and 2 days. Wood heat, hand pump on the well and newly married the month before, the time went by well......

Last time I had an ice storm, branches in neighborhood took down power lines. It looked like a war zone.

I don't understand why people put trees next to houses and power lines. Trees are an accident waiting to happen. Not to mention a mess to clean up.

Yes I do , the worst damage was in the northern part of the state, Jefferson, Lewis and St Lawrence Counties and possibly more. One of my best friends was sent up north for about 6-8 weeks , home evry other weekend as he works for the cable company.

How did you fare in that ice storm down in the catskill area? I am south of Syracuse and we had damage like rusty 6 but didnt have the massive power grid damage like up north.

What a blow that is! I will say a prayer for you and your neighbors who are suffering. Did you get a report of how much rain the equivalent would be? And I suppose you still have canola to seed? Will there be damage to crops that may already be up?

The very different weather is certainly a challenge for those who so strongly depend on it.

I don't think any canola has emerged around here but further to Northwest I hear talk of damage to their canola from the cold. Oddly enough the few potatoes up in my garden do not appear to have any frost damage at all.
