1948 B, power lift, and 3 point hitch

Recently purchased a 1948 John Deere B. It came with a 3point hitch attached to the power lift rock shaft. I havent tried it out yet but have been told it can only go all the way up or all the way down. Could I use a box blade or a 3pt sickle mower on this? Any tips on operating such a system?

I have a 44 'A' with probably the same system. Yes you can use a box blade or mower or any 3 point implement.Only thing it has no 'draft' control. You have to manually control the hieght or depth with the handle. If you need to limit depth, you need to use a chain to control the depth.Just play with it some.Lift it some, try letting it down gradually. You will figure it out.BTW,the clutch has to be engaged before the three point will work. It's not 'live' like newer tractors are.

Is your lift controlled by a pedal or pedals in front of the battery box or a lever to the side of the battery box? If the later, you have a Power-Trol which gives you position control of the hitch and implement.

Would I have to remove the entire power lift system? Any details on the flip? I was under the impression the power lift was a mechanical system

My A has the pedal under the right heel. there is a through shaft to the left connected to a factory cast handle. Nason, play with the padal a bit. See how it reacts when you step on it.When I move the handle to the rear,it raises. I can stop it when I return the handle to the center. Same with lowering. Move it too the front to to lower.Place the lever at the center to hold position.

I have a single pedal in the middle. I only have 2 handles one for the clutch and the other for the PTO

The power lift and power-trol are both control valves that are mounted on the big rock shaft housing. You don't disturb the rock shaft housing when you change from one to the other.

Both valves are a combination hydraulic/mechanical device.

Go to jdparts.com and look at the free parts catalog PC-330. The rock shaft, power lift, and power-trol are on pages 102-110.

Model A, B, 50 and 60 all used the same powr-trol valve. This should make it easier for you to find one for your '48 B.

Here's one on eBay, there are others as well. This one has a plus in that it has quick connects already installed. Be careful, some sellers have a power lift but mistakenly call it a powr-trol.

Tractor salvage yards are another source.

So I would just unbolt my current valve on the tractor and bolt this one on? I could leave the pedestal with the seat and rockers alone?
