teflon for stopping fuel leaks on a threaded gas tank connection? I've already got some teflon on a threaded elbow on my gas tank before the sediment bowl and it is starting to leak. The teflon is yellow.

Doug.... Good morning. Yellow is for natural gas and not for petrol or diesel. But even so I even thought too it would slow the leak down or stop iit.

Teflon is good for tapered threads like pipe threads. For the most part, straight threads have too much clearance
for Teflon to seal. You are probably missing an o-ring or other type of seal.

Doug, if there's any metal to metal beveled/flange fitting or any o ring type of seal I don't like to use anything.

HOWEVER if you're talking leaks past threads (such as pipe fittings up into a gas tank) or on other surfaces (with or
without a gasket) you might want to look at a few products I listed below.

As far as sediment bowls where the bowl mounts, I have used fuel resistant sealer coatings and at times I simply coated
them with grease which helped.

Gas or Fuel Resistant are key words to look for in a sealant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Permatex Permashield Fuel Resistant Sealer

Permatex Permashield? 85420 Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Sealant 2 oz. Carded Pack - Walmart.com - Walmart.com

MasterBond Fuel Resistant Adhesives, Sealants & Coatings

I hate leaks ESPECIALLY gas on my new clean painted tractor lol

When I put a new valve on an overhead tank years ago, the fuel man told me that pipe dope was meant for plumbing water fittings,
said Permatex was made for petroleum applications.

Teflon tape doesn't work in hydraulic threads
I have used pipe dope.
Was thinking of using thread locker.
May try permatex aviation on those stubborn leaks

I use a sealant called Leak Lock. Its blue and in a little tube. Its specifically for LPG but works good on gas. works real good
if you can get it real dry and leave overnight

Where is the leak?
From the threaded hole in the bottom of tank??
If pipe thread, the hole might be to large or there could be a hairline crack radiating from the hole.
It can be so tiny that filling tank with water will not leak.
But gasoline will leak.
Perhaps a hairline crack in a fitting elsewhere.

When I worked at a gas station we had to replace hoses and handles pretty often, we used a sealer in a brush can called Gasolia, never had a leak. It looks a lot like plumbers pipe dope.

550Doug,

Yellow teflon is for gas pipe use. You
need to use white teflon, two to three
wraps, wrapped opposite thread rotation.

You may also NEED a new fitting,

GUIDO.

I have used Indian head gasket shellac with success with gasoline. I'm not saying its ideal, but it worked just peachy.

The yellow teflon is for natural gas or propane. It's heavier than the white stuff for water. If it were me I would use a liquid thread sealant like RectorSeal Tru-Blu.

If flared or JIC fittings are leaking it will probably need a new fitting as the old one is more than likely got a crack or damaged face on it. Tapered pipe threads the tape should work just fine. Be careful to not over tighten fittings with sealers on them . Especially pipe threads, as they swage open with tightening.

At work we have been using Teflon tape and
tru blue over it, tru blue is about 8 to 10
dollars more per can but works great!
