breather for a hydro cylinder to ram conversion

I had a friend give me a cylinder for use on my old Allis with 1 way hydraulics. Whats the best method to make a breather on the pull side of the cylinder to use it as a push ram. Im certain it would fill with wasp nests and dust if I just leave the port open, and probly suck the seals out if I screwed a plug in there. Im currently considering a pipe fitting stuffed full of stainless steel wool, but I sometimes have terrible ideas that make things way way harder than they need to be.

There are breather plugs available for exactly what you're wanting to do. Your local hydraulic shop should be able to set you up with one.

The best method is to run a return line back to the tank. That way the cylinder is free to breathe, and no dirt gets drawn in.

Using a double acting cylinder as a single moves more air than a true single acting cylinder.

If no local hydraulic shop, McMaster has them
