I have a question as to regards on the ta system for these tractors, my ta lever is stuck in high, I'm pretty sure cable and linkage is frozen up. but my question is if the high and low side both go out will tractor not drive at all? I am having issue with building pressure for ta steering and three point. I have also noticed that at low throttle clutch pedal gets some what hard, but when rev up it gets easier to press down to shift and tractor drive and clutches smoothly. I am going to drain hydraulic fluid and change filter first before I start tearing into pumps.

If one side goes out of the TA,it will still move in the other side. Sometimes for years on one side.Sounds like the filter could be possibly restricted and not getting a proper full supply of oil to the pumps. how long since it has been changed? Is there water /sludge in the system?Has the tractor sat for a long time? When you change the filter, the oil you 'lose' will be indicitive of what is in there.Definitely change the filter first.Dirty filters cause all kinds of issues.

Ive got the same problem, been haying with it for last 5 years in high side of TA. Should I be concerned that Ill loose both sides of TA? Runs my round baker and loads hay trailer.

Yes, you should be concerned. Usually when one side goes out the other side is not far behind. Sometimes the other side will last for years too. It's all luck of the draw.

If you haven't been socking money away for a TA replacement, now is a good time to start.

If both sides of the TA go out but tractor is dead in the water. It will not move. However if only one side of the TA is out it will continue to move on the one good side. As sad it can run on one side for years or it can fail pretty soon. Luck of the draw

When the direct (high side) goes out on a large frame IH, the hydraulic clutch becomes worn or hemorrhages past the piston seals. It can then still operate in low range, but may or may not have coasting control (keeps from coasting down hill faster than intended for the gear it is in. It can also have a failed low range one way clutch (sprag clutch) that drive motion in low range. If so the coasting control hydraulic clutch will have insufficient friction to drive in low range, and it will only work in direct. If the direct clutch, and the sprag clutch are bad, it will not move.

In a small frame tractor the same ideas apply, but there is no coast control, and no hydraulic clutches, the direct clutch is manual dry clutch. Jim
