Your posts on the Detroit Diesel post has perked my interest. You knowledge on those engines have me wondering, did you work at Harper's in Toronto? If so ,when and if on the floor, what part, truck, rebuild, repower,in the corner where the reefer units where built, the old or new building?
As mentioned I was there in late '69-'71.

My Father-in-law worked for Harvey Krotz Ford of Listowel for a couple of decades . Both as a licensed diesel mechanic and as their heavy tow driver .
Back in the day the diesel option was very $$$ in medium trucks , small single axle tractors etc . Trucks would be ordered gas but will the low ratio diesel differential gears . As soon as the new truck was unloaded at the dealership . The new truck would be driven to Harper DD to have a Screaming Jimmy swapped in .
He said the trip down could have a high top end speed with the high revving gasser and the low ratio diesel diff gears .
He was not there where the apprentice filled the oil bath air cleaner cups to the top with oil . He did however see the tire skid marks .

I have been there at the parts counter mixing and matching parts for various versions of an engine and numbers of cylinders .
As just one example . Parts dude did not believe me that two sleeves and pistons for a 4-53 would work in the obsolete 2-53 .
It was painful when I mentioned the four valve cylinder head .

While I Was there,Laidlaw Transport bought a bunch of Super Duty 1000s with tag axles through Middlesex Ford. They used 6V71s ,5 speed tranny's and 2 speed rear that was remove and the ratios changed. There was room in the shop for 6 units and they knocked of a unit every 5-6 days, shorter if they didn't have to wait for the diferantials. They also did a bunch of GMC's for Verspeeten Transport and Vrootman Cookies. The first Louisville got a 6-71 inline, that was interesting,Ford and dealer reps where tripping over each other, lots of pictures taken, a regular media circus. At the same time they had contract the supply Reefer power units for rail car using 4-53s. It was interesting times.
