Installing new cav pump on ford tractor

Can I get some help , I tryed doing a full re-seal on my cav injection pump on my Ford 420 and that didnt go well.. so I bought another pump , so Im just wondering if I leave the spring in the top cover in the holes its in when I get the pump or change it to what hold the original pump spring was in. (If its even in different holes, havent got the pump yet).
Thanks

What happened to the original pump? Maybe it can be saved. Ford used several CAV DPA pumps, the spring setting code is the not that critical IF the new pump is the
correct one for your engine. I've saved lots of pumps that were thought beyond hope..

The tractor would need bled to start after a couple days sitting , and the top cover on pump was leaking . So I got brave and took pump off to re-seal the whole thing (instead of just cover). Put it back together. Installed on tractor . Then got tractor started but it ran away on me and fuel got into crank.

Ck welcome to YT! Dieseltech is a frequent poster here and helps many folks with their injection pump issues.
He repairs injection pumps and many folks who post here ship him pumps to repair. And all I ever hear is how
satisfied they are with the job and how reasonable the charges were for the work. All I would add is I assume
since you attempted to reseal your pump that you likely know enough about how to properly time the pump
when installing it.

Glad I finally joined!! Ive been reading forums on here for years.
As for timing the pump I had read there is no way of messing it up as theres only one way to put it back on with the slot lining up . Hopefully Im not wrong lol

As for timing that's correct, line up the slot with the pin in the gear, then line up the scribe mark with zero on the block plate and your done.
As for the spring in the new pump, "leave it alone" if it's the correct pump for your tractor it'll already be set to proper spec, put the pump on and run it.

I've been around Ford tractors my whole life and have used and worked on models with CAV pumps for nearly 50 years, I'll replace the top gasket and vanes in the transfer pump, but for anything else I send it to a pump shop, to me once a pump is disassembled and put back together it needs to be put on a pump stand to be checked and recalibrated.

I couldnt find a pump matching the exact numbers as the old one but the pump I bought was for a ford 445 and if my research was correct it is the same motor. So I shouldnt change the spring setting?

One more question , do I line the pump up to zero or to where the old pump was (which was just past zero)?
Thanks
