Neighbor has a JD 4000, that emits white,
(blue or gray depending on the light.)
Doesnt seem to matter if under load or
not. Wondering what most likely problem.

My diesels dont smoke like that. A little
black maybe under some circumstances.

Hello RayP(MI),

Is is incomplete combustion. Most likely, a bad, dribling injector. Valve timing could be another reason too. Isolating the cylinder-s not fully firing is one way.

May be a valve adjustment is in order, as late valve timing will affect combustion, amongst other factors, from fuel pressure to restricted air cleaner, to mention a few,

Guido.

I am assuming this is a diesel,so if it is white smoke it is a fuel issue, and if it is blue smoke it is blow by.Does it have any noticeable loss of power?if so,it probably the fuel filter(s) or air intrusion.

Diesels that have white smoke is usually caused by low compression, or late injection timing. Start with checking timing, adjust if not to spec. Next is removing all injectors for a compression test, should be 350-400 PSI for a clean exhaust. Engines will run at 300-325 when warm, but don't start well cold and could have white smoke cold until engine warms up. Also make sure the thermostat is working right too, running too cold will aggravate white smoke.
