I had a brush pile burning for a week, but has sat for a week. I wanted to get the ashes spread before it started in raining, so took the forks and started picking out un-burned timber. It took off and started burning, so stirred it up good and let it go. It looks like the ashes will not be cool enough to spread tomorrow.

A couple of years ago I got a 3 day permit to burn some slash piles, on the 4th day 2 ranger showed up. they dug around in the ashes until they found some live embers and wrote me a warning ticket!

We have burn permits here too, mine is good for a year, but I have to call it in. I called the sheriff dispatch, told them what happened and asked them to activate my permit, no issues. We have a really good sheriff department here, they encourage you to let them know when gone and they will put your property on a watch. Not bad for a county with 200K people.

Fire officials are not all dumb. Most want people to be able to get rid of their brush and slash, but some guys unfortunately develop a track record of inattention and lack of concern for the potential for a headache. In the course of my 39 years I'll bet that our small town has had fifty fires caused by cold ashes.

About 15 years ago there was a huge oak tree, dead for years, widow makers hanging 40 ft in the air above, that I had to farm around. It was 150 feet from a highway and had worked ground all around it. Set it on fire and it was burning really good, no wind to carry any live ash, so left it to burn. Some do gooder called the fire department and they came and put the fire out. My fault by not calling and letting the fire department know, but . . . .

We don't have burn permits but most farmers call in when they are burning drifts in the river bottoms because someone will call the fire department.

Yes but SV comes from a state that has only 1,500,000 people in it. Yes I'm off on the population though my point is about the same.
