Wood clear coat

Even though this a tractor form some one always comes up with some information. I am painting cabinet doors a clear coat of polyurethane. I want to spry this finish on my doors. The can says brush only. I'm sure this because of the restrictions on spraying anything paint related. Anyone know if this Polyurethane can be thinned, and what with? Thanks, Stan

Yes you can spray it.
Does a nice job and is Much quicker than a brush. I didn't need to thin it but if you do use ordinary mineral spirits.
I've done a lot of doors and trim that way.
Between coats use those green 3M scrubber pads on a palm sander. Get a pack of them at Home Depot and cut to size.

Credysis ..... you mention turpentine, it was the go-to stuff back when I was a kid but I haven't seen it forever but I suspect it's still available at most Home Depot type stores. The cost might drive a guy to the mineral spirits or paint thinner or whatever it is called now. I loved the smell of turpentine when I was a kid.

Good advice from others and to add to: use low odor mineral spirits, others will appreciate it, laying flat reduces chance of runs but increases chance of dirt getting on it, and have good lighting in order to see your overlaps.

I prefer Shellac to Poly on wood. Just gives it protection and a natural finish that looks great under "Old English" furniture polish. I use Zinnsser Bulls Eye, in aerosol or can at big box stores. My experience with Poly is what you are talking about....it looks "globbed on".

The only poly I ever liked is Minwax Helmsman. Indoor/outdoo in gloss, semi-gloss or satin. I used it on bathroom woodwork and it held up well. Other I've used left what looked like tiny bubbles on the surface.

I sprayed all my trim in 93 with my Binks spray gun. Minwax poly thinned with a little mineral spirits.

It says brush only because it's too thick to spray. All you have to do is thin it with mineral spirits, (as little as possible). Naphtha would work better for spraying.

If you over thin polyurethane it will screw with the sheen and not give you the appearance you desire. It should splatter slightly when spraying it. It dries slow enough it will flow together.

Either way take doors off lay flat coat and put cardboard on floor and lay doors flat until dry and somewhere that dust isn't being disturbed
