Fan belt replacement - grease recommendation

Hi All,

Changed ye olde fan belt on the Farmall M and want to grease up the threaded collar to ensure easy on/off and future adjustment.

What do you recommend?

The threaded collar? The sheave? I didn't grease mine on my 400 when I had one. Just wire wheeled it nice & clean. Do the same to the set screw. No problem then. Wouldn't want to risk grease oozing onto the belt either. Less chance of slippage & there's a good many times that rubber & petroleum products don't get along well. Unless you found a belt that requires grease? I'd recommend that you don't forget to grease the muffler bearings while you're at it. ;v)

Put this on the threads, it will keep them operational for several years, and if repeated every 5 or so will make it easy to change the belt. Remember the belt is to be 1 inch loose when pushed hard !!! Very important to keep the water pump bearings alive. Jim

Silver Goo (molybdenum Disulfide)mwill work, I forgot to attach LPS corrosion inhibitor in my post below. Jim

Hi Jim,

1 inch deflection when pushed hard - got it.

What deflection would you recommend for an installed alternator?

Think right now I have 1/2 inch deflection with what I would call medium pressure.

That sounds about right. It should show it in the operators manual.

While anti seize is good stuff it's like nnalert, starts out with a little dab here and by the end of the day i'm finding it on everything everywhere.

then you are using way too much of it..

once assembled, wipe off any excess seen and you wont have that problem anymore.
