What are pros and cons of 1978 Case 970. good sheet metal every thing works, fair tires, low hours, it has a cab but no air.

What is a fair price.

Thanks

Manual or Powershift? Guys tend to beat on
those Powershifts, I understand that they
are fairly easy to replace if you're
mechanically inclined but it does involve
splitting the tractor i believe. I've
never owned one but I've looked it to them
alot and from what I understand they are a
good tractor with a near bullet proof
engine. Someone else will be able to tell
you more.

Great tractors in the 90 hp range. If everything is good when
you get it and you keep it up they are a great tractor. They
come either 8speed with dry clutch which are more rare but
mostly bulletproof. Otherwise they are a 12 speed power shift.
They work good and are easier to shift for things like loader
as round baling as reverse works like a shuttle, just push the
clutch and shift with no gear grinding. They do need to have
real Case Hytran oil, or the new equivalent in the trany. If you
don't know what's in it, change it and put the case oil in. Also
don't let it it still with the pto running in reverse like on a
manure pump or silage blower as that will ruin the trany.
Working with pto in reverse like on a snow blower is fine. As
said, the engine is about the best and most fuel efficient there
is and has enormous torque for its hp. They are40-50 years
old so check for antifreeze in the oil which usually comes from
sleeve o-rings leaking.

If it's good when you get it it will serve you well.

I will second Jon F's reply.

good well built tractors. see what you can find out about the power shift. not a problem but if abused (like anything) can be a problem. if its truely a low hour unit it is probably ok.

price? well. depends on where you are. i've seen them from $3000-7000. if a cream puff maybe more than that. yeah that's a big range but depends on the condition and where you are. too big for little guys and too old and small for the big time guys

99.9% of every powershift issue is caused by operator error and or incorrect service I have them with 15K on them and never been touched, work perfectly still,, they were by far the best on the market all the way around when introduced in 1969,,
