JD 3020 Diesel Engine Noise

I have a "new to me" '65 JD 3020 Diesel Syncro. I have the hood and side panels off while going through basic maintenance (filters, oils, coolant, etc) and
checking things out. I am new to JD diesels and wondering how noisy they should be? Hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from or what it is? Rattling or
clacking sound from top and front of engine. I went ahead an changed the front hydro coupling bushings as a precaution. I didn't notice the noise as much with the
hood and panels on.

It fires right up and doesn't smoke. Not sure if I am being paranoid or need to investigate.

First indication of a engine problem is metal particles in the oil. Don't know what else you could do. Older diesel engines are just noisy I guess. My 401B is rather noisy, and has been like that for years, the noise doesn't get worse, so I guess it's just a normal diesel noise. Stan

Those hyd. pumps can make a good racket. I'd of started it up with that coupling off to see if that quieted it down. With engine off grab fan blade and see if you get any wiggle at all. If you get some the water pump bearing is going out. Now the 3020 has an engine balancer assembly and I have read where the bushings in them can fail. If not caught in time it can damage the engine block if it lets loose. I have not been around 3020 much so I don't know what sort of sound if any they make with a failing balancer. But if I owned one I'd sure be worried about it failing from what I have read about them.

I have one. Its quiet and runs smooth. Do you have anyone near you that has experience with them that could listen to it in person? It's my understanding that the 3020s have a unique block. If the block gets damaged beyond repair they are nearly unobtainable. If you find one you'll have to pay big bucks. Even if you had to go inside the engine at this point you'd be money ahead to prevent further damage. Otherwise they're a nice sized, handy tractor. I really like mine
