Super C wiring questions

I am getting close to ordering some new wiring for my Farmall Super C, but I was wondering what the proper way to use different color wire is.

It sounds like a simple question, but what I mean is, there are probably 7 or 8 different wires on the tractor, and I do not think I could find 7 or 8 different color wires. Should I just try to use different colors for the longer wires, and the wires going to and from the dashboard area so I do not get confused when following the wire?

Also, I am not going to try to get original type wire, I will just buy modern automotive wire. Maybe in the future I would consider doing a complete restoration with original, authentic 1950s style wire, but for now, I will not do that.

As for wire gauge, I believe people have mentioned 10, 12, and/or 14 gauge wire. Any other advice for wire gauge?

One more question, and I hope its not too many questions, but what about the battery to starter and battery to ground wires? Those look much thicker, what are the specifications on those?

Thank you very much,

John

Tell us more about your tractor. Is it still 6 volt battery positive
ground? Do you have a generator and voltage regulator or an alternator?
You might be money and time ahead to buy a wiring harness as opposed to
do it yourself wiring harness.
Battery cable size depends on battery voltage being 6 or 12 volt but 00
would be good for either. A good starter/generator shop can make one for
you. Ground cable is short and goes to steering post originally.

On line sources are selling multi colored wire, and wire with stripe for tracing. Order it and be
satisfied that it is best practices. You need (obviously) battery cables at 2 gauge, Power cables
from the amp gauge to the starter switch from the amp gauge to the regulator, and from the
regulator to the arm terminal on the gen. If there is an L terminal being used, it should also be
10ga. The remaining wire should all be 12 ga. It is slight overkill, but easier to work with, and
connect, as well as stronger against vibration. Do this once correctly, not temporarily. Take my
word on this doing it twice is unreasonable. Use soldered on connections, and shrink tubing to
water proof the terminals. I like putting a dab of liquid tape on the terminal to seal the solder
to the shrink tubing. Your tractor is nice and will serve well. people who look for perfect
factory materials and count lines and dots on bolt heads don't pay attention to Super Cs very much.
They also do not often realize how poorly the "Factory" pain job and general fit and finish was
performed. Do it so it will last once. Jim
