Baling tractors

What do you guys use to bale with. Small square. I usually use an 826Hydro,or a 706. However,I sometimes use the 1256 or 1456. Haven't used the SuperM since I got the inline. However, before that, the 'old super' baled a lot of hay.Just asking for 'giggles'. Steve

I’ve used a few but my last two favourites have been a Farmall 460 diesel and then a Farmall 300. I like the independent PTO and TA. Only doing small squares but it keeps me entertained.

I baled a lot of small squares in the late 60's with a JD R, I think it was a great tractor for it. Live pto, live hydraulic, and I liked the hand clutch. If I would happen to miss the wagon with the kicker I just pop the clutch back and jump off and retrieve the missed bale. I still love the sound of an R when I hear one.

I've baled some with a 560D and a 300(Dont own either anymore). 560 worked great.I really liked that one the 300 didn't have enough 'poop' for the NH283 daler in heavy hay.

Sorta like this?

But the one I like to use is the 450:

I have used a MF 165, DB990, farmall H, JD3020 and 4020. I think the JD 3020 and 4020 are the best small square baling tractors from what I have used. Plenty of power, flat floor comfortable seat. The powershift is better than the synchro to me. IMHO

My grandfather always had a motor on his baler with his Ford 8n. When he got the Ford 3000, the balers varied in either pto or engine. Then we did the motor swap on the 3000 to a 4110. Now we are trying it on the 6610.

Square bale with a 4230 open station powershift and round bale with a 4250 powershift. The powershifts are nice for speeding up and slowing down depending on thickness of the windrow.

Was trying to think what I've square baled with in the last 20 years or so...
Ford 3610, 4630, 5000, 6610, 7700, 7710, 8630
Allis 7010
CIH 484, 485, 584, 585, JX80, Maxxum 125pro
Kubota L5030, M120
Massey 135, 5455
NH 8160

Fav's are the ones with AC and hydro or powershift. Least favourite are the non-sync shift ford's with dual stage pto clutch, no fun baling in heavy hay on hills or roading to fields.

In my youth, when we baled all over the place, all summer, it was a WD45 on a JD 214W baler. The hand clutch was the key, but, it should have been a D17, as, at times, we didn't have a low enough gear. The baler would poke out the material, but if we only had one guy on the wagon, he couldn't keep up!

About the first real driving job I did was on the 830 com in front of a case 200 baler with dad stacking on the wagon. Then later a 220 or 230 case then a Massey 12. When we got the 124 Massey with the thrower dad ran the 730 comfort king dry clutch on it for many years. This year I'll use my 830 com again on either a case 200 or 220 baler which ever works better. Last year I used my 400 on the 200 baler.

At one time I baled hay with a JD MT, 430 and an old G. The G worked pretty good as it had torque. Later used a SMTA which seemed like paradise with live pto and t/a after the others . Now use a Farmall 560 diesel. The SMTA handled the baler, a NH282, ok but gulped the fuel. 560 does a great job and uses a lot less fuel. A lot of the old balers here had engines so lots of guys ran them with small fords and occasionally a pickup

The Oliver square baler I use now I pull it with a D15 Allis Chalmers, when we used to square bale a lot of hay we pulled the baler with either the
AC D19 or the Oliver 77.Also baled a whole lot of hay with an AC Roto Baler pulled by a WD45 AC.

I only do maybe 1000 small squares through a 336 baler anymore. Last year I used a 2030 diesel. The year before that i used a 2020 gas. I've also used a 4430 open station and a 4010. I round baled with a 4430 cab tractor until I sold it and bought a 4640. The 4640 is a little overkill, but I am fine with that.

I was baling with a Ford 8240 which was a little on the large size. Then I downsized a few years ago to 15 acres so the 8240 went down the road. Here is my current rig:

mvphoto55539.jpg

I baled without the front weights the first year but on a steep uphill the front got too light with any more than 50 bales on the wagon.

When we were running the JD 224ws we had the JD 60 on it. When we got the Heston 4590 inline the JD 2640 went on it. We kept the 224 in reserve for the last ten years or so. It finally left the spring. Now I have at least 14 boxes of wire to sell.

3020 stands a good chance of being handiest square baler tractor ever. Well it's pretty decent at least.

cvphoto45385.jpg

We have the 4020 Powershift and the 4010. The powershift is really nice to mow and bale with so my wife gets that one. Years ago we started out at mom’s place with the JD 2440. The fields were flat there. Our fields have some slope and getting additional 25 HP moved me up past the 3020 size. Gravity and a fully loaded wagon is no problem for these guys. I wouldn’t go smaller.

Yes, that's me on the R, except out wagons were home built all out of wood, I could kick about 90 in the wagon, go stand some up
around the sides and kick in another 20!

It’s not ytmag approved but we use a JD 5100E on a JD 348. I have used my 1256 on the baler. Good tractor it is but not on the baler.

The ihc 300 with hi/lo has been a perfect match for the 271 baler for 5 decades. This isn’t a super high output baler, 35 hp is perfect.

Of late I grab the Ford 5200 with the 8 speed plus high low, but really more tractor than I would need and a little wide it can run down the windrow.

Used to pull a 100 or so bale rack, now I pull a 100 or so bale basket.

Paul

Nothing unusual here - old NH275 with thrower and older JD 3020 diesel with synchro and ROPS canopy for hot days.

I know an Allis Chalmers that used to run a John Deere 24T at about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. With the hand clutch it was live PTO so you could slow or stop for a heavy bunch easy and you had to be careful not to stuff too much hay into it or the governor would kick in and bust a shear bolt, which it would do with easee. It was an easy job for the tractor.

Last time I did small squares, 1030 Case and NH baler

I used to use a Ih47 with thrower and wagons pulled by my Case 730 and baled thousands of bales. Still have the tractors and balers, but thrower wagons are gone, only flat racks left. Balers and wagons may as well go too, I don’t want to do small squares again.

A lot depends on how flat the ground is, hilly ground requires a lot bigger tractor to keep you out of trouble.

the best baleing tractor i ever had was a jd 6400 and a 535 baler that power quad made all the difference, using a 596 massey now days with a 469 baler and that works pritty well, back in the day we had a 37 ih baler and puled with a 1520 jd thay all got the job done.

I drove on the baler a lot when I was a kid on the farm. We had New Holland with a two cylinder engine, ran at high rpms. We pulled it with a Allis Chalmers B never had a problem but it was always on flat ground. I’m 72 years old so it was quite a few years ago.

Square bales use an IH 656 Hydro on a Case-IH inline. Works great. Small windrow push the lever up, big windrow, pull it back a little. On the JD round baler, use an IH 966 Hydro. Works great on that. Have also used an IH 856 on both. Try to use that on the mower now and leave the Hydro's on the balers.

I'm able to use my Dad's new in 61 Dexta Fordson 2000 on a NH 67 hayliner but not lately. Rounds are nice 5x6 on a Gehl 1840 I believe as I'm not looking at the number. I bought a 706 D to run the round baler but the tractor has mcv and a sprague clutch issue which I am about to get into, though I find another job for it seems before I get there. I'm blessed to be able to use my Brothers 7700 JD on the round baler. It is nice with the transmission but I am doing some lots that are convoluted, it's a big tractor for that. Found a NH 905 swather not far from home, a gasser but in good shape seems like. I'm hoping it will be good around the lots as far as not tramping too much. SW Ontario, we are 3-4 weeks to our first cut though the weather is the dictator.

Massey 180 with a Massey 3 with thrower .the thrower was one that came with a Briggs on it but i made it in to one that ran off the front fly wheel worked like a charm

Mostly J.D. 710 and NH 65 baler with thrower. Wife builds two layers to the front of wagon then thrower tosses them to her so she can stack 7 or 8 high.

My favorite was a 49 John Deere B with first a New Holland 66 baler with engine, later that B with IHC NO. 46 baler with thrower. The 50 AR Deere did not handle baler as good as the smaller B. Baled with a 44 2N Ford, 38 John Deere A and 46 John Deere B with that New Holland as well, Quit making hay in 1980.

Grew up pulling a NH68 with Wisconsin engine using a Ferguson TO35. Later used the Ferguson TO35 to run a NH273 with PTO. Then a Massey Harris 50 on the NH273. Today, almost 60 years later, I use a Massey Ferguson 35 to run a John Deere 24T. All these tractors had live pto and 6 speed transmissions.

Dad used to have a neighbor bale our hay with an IH 300 utility pulling an IH 46 baler. Then, Dad bought an old IH 45 baler back when I was in junior high school. We pulled it with a 1951 Farmall M, and once with the 1949 John Deere B so we wouldn't have to take the cultivator off the M for a small field of nice second cutting alfalfa. A couple years later, he bought an Oliver 88 - live PTO made things a little easier. He never bought himself a decent square baler but finally bought a new round baler and a John Deere 4010.

4440 or 4240 and inline or 8320r and agco 4910 or agco 3x4 and you can cut for a week so that you have enough acres to keep the rake and baler going for a friday night, saturday, saturday night, sunday, sunday night!!

Thought I might be the only one still using a NH905 swather. Simple and cheap to run, I actually have a 903 and a 909 also it was easier to get a swather for each farm than move them as they moved slow and my swather trailer was not the best. Do most of my baling with Farmall M, MD, or SMTA’s. Sometimes use my ford 5000 or ih1066 hydro but I mainly just enjoy using my old farmalls

460lp and 550 hesston with a 400lp for backup. Before the 550 I used an IH 2400. The 2400 made decent bales (for its age)....*after* I got everything setup right. The 550 of course makes much tighter bales.

Last one I ran was a JD 3150 on a NH 315 baler. Going way back it was Ford 4000, 4 cylinder model on a ford 532 baler, we also had an early 70's 5000 for a short while, same baler. The back up was an IH 45 that actually worked pretty good, they were definitely not known for that LOL ! I kind of liked the bigger heavier tractors, the 3150 MFWD was really nice on the 315. The other rig for round bales was the much newer JD 7420 and JD 583 sileage special. I used to road it to the fields often, but never got to bale with it, was always on the 315. That set up was pretty nice actually, much newer than anything I had ever been around.

The absolute 'Cadillac' of bailing I ever used was an Oliver 1550 diesel with the over/under. If you are in an irregular shaped field with inconsistent windrows the over/under will allow you to get bales so pretty they look store bought...

Starting with a 960 Ford, 4000 Ford, 770 Oliver and now 5105 mfwd John Deere . Square Balers- JD 24f, IH 47 , now JD 336.

Two balers, NH68 and a JD348 w/pan kicker. Tractors on front of the NH68 have been a MF50 diesel and a JD5055d. Tractors in front of the JD348 have been the JD5055d and hoping to put the MF1105 in front of it this year.

When we had the MH268 we could bale with most any tractor. Fast forward to the NH570 and it takes at least the MF265 and sometimes is happier with the JD4020 as it needs to be run at capacity to make a uniform square bale. Last year I was able to run it with the Farmall H as the grass hay was really dry and baled easy. I wouldn't have used it, but was the only tractor available at the moment.

Have used a Farmall 460, Case 800, JD 720, Cockshutt 50, Allis WD, Farmall 756, Farmall 656, and a NH TN85A over the many years I've been farming.

Currently using a JD 4600 to pull a JD 336 that has had the thrower removed.
Before that, we used an Oliver 62T baler until we killed it when we picked up some metal and the shear bolt failed to work.
Before we got the 4600, we pulled the Oliver with an IH 424 gas tractor. It had the power to do it, but it was hard on it.
In a pinch, we've even been known to use a 1952 Case SC Eagle Hitch tractor to pull that Oliver. Worked fine, except that with but three forward work speeds low was always too slow but 2nd was too fast. We haven't tried it yet, but I don't doubt but what in a pinch that old SC would run the JD 336, too.

Out of all the responses only two of you guys mentioned using a two banger. All through the 50's and 60's our neighborhood baler guy had a two banger on the baler. First two banger was a 60 pulling a Case hand tie wire tie baler with the famous Wisconsin. I barely remember the Case baler as I was too young at the time. Second baler was a Deere 14t still pulled by the same 60 but sometime in the early sixxties the 60 was replaced with a 730 gas and the 14T was replaced with a 24T. In 1969 a new 4020 replaced the 730 and we thought we had died and gone to heaven. The 4020 was heavy and strong enough to not pull down with every plunger stroke so we could keep the bales stacked straighter on the rack. With a two banger on the baler the bales tended to start leaning forward on the rack. We did not have backs on the racks. We quit replacing PTO knuckles when the 4020 came into service. The 4020 was later replaced with a 4030, the first gen 2 Deere I had seen so it was an early one. A 336 baler came into play toward the end. After that we got smart and used large rounds.
