I took the gearbox apart, still haven?t got the sleeve on the shaft to move. There is no set screw on the sleeve, it has a gear made into the sleeve. No room to get a puller on it. Do I dare heat it up without damaging the gear? I?m running out of ideas to try. Help!!!!! Chris

It may be bad eyesight on my part. But it sure looks like the splines on the shaft are not all there. The bearing should slide over the shaft.

Yes, the outer bearing slides onto the shaft up to the teeth. I need to get the sleeve with the gear off of the shaft so I can get to the bearing behind it.

How hard is the face that has the yellow paint? Since it looks like it is part of the same piece as the gear probably to hard to drill. My suggestion if you can drill it is to drill it to tap in 4 1/4 or 5/16 in. bolts then fasten a 3/8 or half inch thick plate on it with a hole and a nut welded on it to put a bolt in to pull it off.

How about removing the bearing rollers, and use a bearing splitter on real tight on the bearing hub. use your puller on that. Stan

yes you can warm it up to about 300 degrees. probably if I got desperate I would tack a plate on the end of that sleeve with a nut inside and use a slide hammer to get it off. being careful to keep the weld towards the centre of sleeve.

Use a good heat gun on it. It will probably take an hour or two to get it hot enough to come off but it's not hot enough to damage anything. Can't remember if mine's 1200 or 1500 but we had to use one like that to disassemble a jacquard head shaft where I used to work. Used a hot plate to get it back together.

It is uncommon to find a square key in the keyway that isn?t held snug by a set screw. It looks like there?s a place for a set screw on that sleeve sort of snugged up against the gear teeth. I?m seeing a dark spot on the left side of the sleeve in the first picture. Does that shaft turn? Good luck with that repair.

I agree. All the square keys I have ever seen. Were held in place by a set screw. I would like to see a better picture of that gear. It still looks like the splines. On the right side of the picture are broken.
