Having issues with my Kubota tractor it will start but when I release the key it dies. If I hold the key over with my hand I can move it forward and backwards, work bucket. anyone with some advice I would be truly thankful

Could be bad ignition switch, or a wiring problem.

From the symptoms I would suspect the switch, but not a lot to go on.

Some diagnostics should be done before changing anything and possibly multiplying problems.

If it has 3-wires to the shutdown solenoid, it is dual circuit.

One circuit pulls the solenoid off and the other circuit holds it so it can run. It sounds like your pull circuit is working and your hold
circuit is not working.

You will have to determine whether it is the solenoid itself or the control module or if it is just a bad ground to the module. Neither is
cheap.

Assuming it is a gasoline tractor, don't do that, you will destroy the starter motor. There is a resistor in the ignition
circuit that lets it start with full voltage, then run on about 1/2 of that voltage. It is either a ceramic block device
near the coil, or it could be embedded in the wiring harness and disguised as a wire. To test the failure of the resistor,
turn the tractor ignition on (no more than 5 minutes) and check for voltage at the ignition switch side of the ignition coil
Small terminal probably has a + mark near it. If no volts, the resistor is bad. Another real possibility is a failure in
the ignition switch. If yo let us know the model, year, and gas or diesel, we can help better. Depending on your skill, you
can diagnose and fix. You sure need a volt meter to do it right. Jim

Kubota makes gas engines. I have 21, 25, and 30 hp gas engines here currently. Two are in Grasshopper mowers, and the 30hp was fit into an older Bobcat.

I don't think they ever put a gas engine in one of their compact tractors though.

Check to see if the wires under the seat are hooked up.I was using a MF compact awhile back and it would start but shut off when I put it in drive the wire under the seat was loose.

The typical safety circuit has the fuel pump/solenoid bypassed when in start mode and interlocked with oil pressure during running. I would check out this circuit, and make sure oil pressure light is not on. There might also be an interlock with the seat as discussed.

O K lots of good guess below but let me try to explain what is going on. Yes it could be the seat
switch but most of the times not. Your L 40 series uses a fuel control solenoid that has THREE
wires one ground, one we call the pull in circuit , power goes to the pull in coil only when you
have the key in the CRANK position then when you drop back to run another coil called the HOLD in
coil is energized . The pull circuit uses a remote relay but the run circuit is powered from the key
switch. Your hold in coil may be bad, most times that is the situation. However if the tractor has
sat and the battery is weak or you have a weak ground the hold in coil can drop out. I can tell you
haw to test the fuel solenoid but easy way is remove the two allen screws and see if it is holding
in.

With a diesel compression is everything. I would start with a compression test. How old is the tractor anyway? I have a 1987 Kubota I'm having to hold the starter on longer and longer before it will run on
it's own.

That will not work on his , everything kubota from 04 on uses power to EXTEND the pin , have to have the solenoid to make it run.
