Shipping containers

I am considering buying a shipping container for storage and possibly parking a tractor in. Have any of you had any personal experience buying one ? Any pitfalls or outfits to stay away from ? One company on craigslist advertises 40 foot containers for $1800. Sounds good but they want me to pay up front. That set off alarm bells for me. What advice does the brain trust have for me? thanks in advance Lee.

We paid $3000 for a 20' container from a local company back in 2005. I can't imagine you're getting much for $1800, if anything.

Those companies that advertise on Craigslist don't give me a good feeling at all.

Many but not all on CL and elsewhere are just people at home that are running the ads. They brokers, they do not own them until the sell one.
There are many grades to choose from.
Beat to hell.
Water/weather tight.
Good enough to ship stuff overseas.
One way used one time.I

Buy from a seller that actually has them in his yard.
A good seller will do a face to face cell phone video/chat with you as he walks around and inside letting you see the condition of the actual unit he can deliver.

Price depends on where you are. Close to a port or intermodal terminal they are cheap. Further out not so much.

The pay up front doesn't surprise me at all. Gotta' look at it from the seller's standpoint. I bought a 40' one straight off of craigslist. Paid up front. , and I got exactly what I expected. No problems at all. Delivered when they said they would. I sure as heck didn't get it for $1800 tho'...

I bought a 20 ft last fall from a guy in Springfield Ma, he sent me pictures of it and delivered it to NW Ma for $2100

The lowest quality we sell is wind/water/rodent tight. That means there are no holes and the doors work and the seals are good. They are beat up tho. I don't know where the price starts but I've picked up checks for around $2500.00 delivered including taxes. I would guess that started out around $2,000.. or so.

The price on shipping containers has drop drastically in the last several months, there is a yard in Cleveland Oh selling water tight 20' for $1100 they will load your trailer. We have had a 20' for about two years, it is amazingly water tight and it doesn't sweat inside. We park an Oliver 66 and an Oliver 77 in it, both narrow fronts.

I have ours sitting on railroad ties with a gravel ramp up to the door, it is be a bit of pain to get tractors in and out.

Lee as close as you are to Nashville I think I can beat that price. You need to come see m I have 4 sitting here. I sit them down then put a roof between them and end up with a good shed. One just need to make sure you raise it up about a foot where water does not run in. And when you buy you want what is called a high cube or one that is taller in the opening.

can always pay with credit card; then if the deal isn't square, let the CC company fight the battle!

So where can I find some that are just not rusted out. I have a different plan for them and don't care if they are water wind tight. I want to cut the ends out and stack 2 then put a couple end to end. This would give me about 80feet long and about 16-18 feet high. Then I was going to put them about 60 feet wide to the outside. With a roof they would be dry. Would make a good shop this way.

If you were to find them at $1600 delivered, set and stacked level your talking at least $6400 per side wall.
Just for the containers.
How much would a conventional pole barn or red metal steel building run?
