Grey Market 55hp 1985 4 cylinder with FEL. Engine was frozen. Worked it out. Rebuilt fuel pump cleaned complete fuel system and added a 2 fuel filter. Long story short I think I got lucky starts and runs great.

Gear Box what oil do you suggest? It has an FEL, I cleaned the screen (wire filter). What hydrolic fluid do you think?

I have a friend that owns a Kubota dealership. From what he tells me.Stay away from Grey Market tractors. Do not work or give advice on one. So you may or may not get help.

I wouldn?t think a Tractor Dealership would much like Grey Market tractors, Billy. I seriously doubt if everyone on this forum is a tractor salesman.

I've had several so called grey market Yanmars no different from the 'official' ones except they usually have a 2 or 3 speed PTO which can be pretty handy at times.

I'm shocked. . . shocked! that an American tractor dealer wouldn't like grey market tractors!

I have a gray market Hitachi excavator that I bought about 2 years ago. So far, there has only been one part I needed that was easiest to get from a Hitachi dealer. First parts guy I talked to gave the a-hole response of "no support for gray market machines". As I was about to leave the counter, another parts guy called me to his work area and got me set up. That was a Thursday and they had the part in Will Call on Monday.

Even if it was tougher to get things for it, I'd still buy a gray market machine. It was so much cheaper than buying a US market machine that I can afford some extra work in finding things.

I know the man that owns the dealership. He showed me the letter he got from Kubota. They could lose the dealership for even. Talking to someone. Or that gave advice or worked on one. That is all I know about it.

We had the same thing. When people were using Onan engines to power aircraft. We were not allowed to talk to,sell parts or repair. Any engine used on an aircraft. You could get fired and the dealership could be shutdown for doing so.I know two that were closed because of it.

I am sure you are free to do as you want to.

Do you have any other machines that use Trans/hyd. fluid ? If so I would use what you use in them already. Be it JD hy-gard or new Holland or case or Kubota.

Yeah, I don't think you're going to have to worry too much about getting in trouble with anyone unless you work for an actual dealer. It's not a crime to own one of these tractors, though some dealers would like to see it made one.

This is an old tractor too, and a Mitsubishi, not a Kubota, so I don't think a Kubota mechanic has to worry too much about his job or his boss's franchise.

I second the notion that if you have other tractors, use the same hydraulic oil as you use in them. As old as this tractor is, I can't imagine it has any exotic materials or mechanisms in the transmission that require special additives or oils at this point.

From what I saw on the paper work.It is a tractor that does not meet USA requlations.Safety and equipment standards.I am sure there are plenty of them in this country. The one I saw looked like any other tractor. To me.

A tractor not made to be sold in the USA. The safety decals are not in English and many times some other stuff is different too. If you happen to be looking at a Kubota you can go to their website and they have a section on gray market machines and list which ones they are.

Then it is a very good thing the original poster didn't ask at a dealer. Of course the dealers hate them! They would be stupid and cutting their own throats if they supported them, but that doesn't mean that we as individuals cannot sometimes get very good deals on very nice equipment through that market. I wish I knew the answer for the OP but I do not.

Engines used on aircraft are a whole other thing. Think liability.

First thing is that any engine used on an aircraft must be certified for that use by the FAA. The only exception being experimental aircraft and possibly ultra lights.

Second thing is that even if an engine is certified for aircraft use, only a licensed A&P mechanic is allowed to work on it. Only exception there is that the owner of an aircraft can do some of his own maintenance work, but it MUST be signed off by a licensed A&P mechanic.

Anything else opens the door for lawsuits. As such, it makes perfect sense that your employer would want you to avoid engines used in aircraft.

I am the first to complain about people buying items not manufactured in the US.

Cars, pickups, can openers etc. I honestly can justify buying a $20k tractor to do my piddily little stuff. In my humble opinion the orange as well as the green tractor companies sell you a product then you need to buy their lubricants and their highly, highly inflated parts and service to keep it running. Like buying a home or auto it s only so many $ a month. If you need it for your profession or you can afford it that is your decision.

I am fairly mechanical and am retired. I enjoy this old grey tractor. It is a 55 hp with a FEL that I gambled on. Bought it for cheap and have very little money in it. If tractor dealers don t approve, I don t care even a little bit. If it stops running I will probably go buy another one.

Tractors from India sold by John Deere dealerships are ok? I don t really get it. Import tax I guess.

I think it is like the autos that are not to be sold in the USA because they do not meet the safety standards or have not been tested and approved.
In this lawsuit happy world it likely has more to do with when someone gets hurt who do they sue ?
Doesn't mean they are not good machines or that places don't sell parts. There is some place that specializes in selling parts for foreign tractors. I can't think of the name right now ? They have a website. Google should bring up some leads.

Just use any universal tractor TDH oil in the trans/hydraulics. I've got a smaller diesel 4wd Mitsubishi 470. Parts can be hard to
find.
There is a company called Valley Power in VA that specialize in Mitsubishi and were able to get transmission parts for me. They
have lots of info on their web site.
I've also got some parts including a new hydraulic screen from my local Case dealer. Some of the smaller Case and International
tractors were actually re badged Mitsubishi's back in the day.... but you have to try and cross reference the model numbers.
