Ford 1710 seals failure

Hi Everyone! We are new to your site, and looking for some advice. We have a (85?) ford 1710 blue tractor with a model 770 bucket attachment. Recently we are experiencing repeated failure of the seals on the hydraulic pump. The problem seems to be aggravated when we are using the bucket with or without cattle feed in it.
Any advice would be much appreciated! :D

Generic answer, common to most gear hydraulic pumps. The seals on the pump are designed to operate under the pressure frm
the intake (suction) side of the device. All hydraulic oil that gets past the bushings supporting the gears passes through a
passage in the end gasket/s to the intake side of the pump. This prevents the pump seals from ever being exposed to
hydraulic system pressure. If the pump was assembled incorrectly the pressure will not be rechanneled. Or if the passages
are plugged, or if the hydraulic system vent to atmosphere is plugged. (allowing excessive reservoir pressure making the
seals "feel" excess pressure. Someone may add with specific info for your tractor. Jim

Jim, would a clogged or undersize return filter, or any restriction on the return circuit, cause a return pressure spike when the loader is lowered rapidly?

As in the return filter needing to be larger than the pump output volume just for that condition?

If it were plumbed so that the return from the cylinders was entering the circuit directly into the reservoir i think it would not. if it was "T"ed into the circuit directly into the suction side of the pump yes. Especially if the suction line had a filter of limited capacity up stream from that "T". return fluid should never be piped to the intake of the pump due to heat buildup in fluid that doesn't get into the reservoir to mix with cooler oil there. Hi
Thanks for the info! I will pass it along to THE BOSS this evening. Appreciate your help

Very clear and concise answer to about 95% of gear pump seal failure, the one thing I may add is IF the housing is so worn that internal pressure will build to the point that the seal are blown. Just like Jan says most common is pump put together wrong but if the end plates or housing is worn those seals are not made to hold pump pressure.
