Having to replace the starter on my 884. Ordered one from this site and received it yesterday. With the loader on the tractor this will not be an easy chore, so I want to be sure I'm right. My concern is that the new starter is boldly marked "clockwise." Is this correct? The starter mounts to the forward side of the flywheel. Curious to know from what perspective the rotation direction is determined--facing the starter motor end or facing the gear end?

Easy enough to check.

The drive gear will turn one direction, lock the other. Which ever way it will turn is the direction the starter motor will run. Being new, it may be difficult to turn, might need to use pliers to turn it.

Holding the starter in the position it will mount, knowing the direction the engine runs, compare the rotation of the drive gear will turn the flywheel.

Both are used dang it. I would jump it with cables (put it in a vise. or stand on it!) almost all engines turn clockwise standing on the non drive end. Thus if your starter mounts on the engine side of the FW, the starter must turn CCW from the end frame point of view, and CW from the drive cone end. Jim
