Deviated septum

Just wondering if anyone has had an operation to correct a deviated septum. I go in Monday for it. My right side of my nose is almost completely blocked off and I'm constantly having problems with Sinusitis. The MD says it will improve my breathing as well as hopefully eliminate some of the sinusitis. I have COPD so I know that any improvement will be good. I pretty much figure it's gonna hurt like H, for awhile. What's you guys opinion of having it done. Keith

Robin, my wife, had it done 20+ years ago. I dont recall any problems with it. Helped her breathing for a long time but it looks like she could use another one.

I had it done. worked great and would do it again. now with that being said; there is pain involved. mine works as good today as when i had it done.

I had it done about 8 years ago.
They told me the pain would be worse than child birth blah, blah, blah.
But as it turned out, it wasn't that bad.
Some pain, yes, but I didn't take the pain killers they gave me.
Maybe I was just lucky.

Hi Keith, I had it done 5 years ago, it wasn't to bad, for me I had to sleep in my chair for about a week, hard for me to breath laying down, they didn't break my nose for surgery Dr said they ground the bone down, no packing in my nose after surgery, it hurt for about a week just to touch my nose, they gave me a spray bulb to rinse my nose with, all in all not to bad. Good luck, let us know how your doing,

I had 80% restriction on one side and 90% on the other. Had polyps and lower turbinates removed and deviated septum corrected 30 years ago. While stuff tends to close back up, I still breath better today than prior to surgery. The worst part for me was having the packing removed. I still shiver thinking about it.

I had both sides done about 50 years ago. The doc used a long skinny chisel and hammer to do a lot of it. I still remember being able to hear everything he did as I was wide awake sitting in a dental chair in the OR. The worst part as blackhole49 said was removal of the string gauze. It felt like my face exploded twice. It was worth the pain after I healed up.

Good Luck!

I could bore you with sinus surgery stories. I?ve had 4, a couple doozies, but I had some other problems too. The packing everyone talks about isn?t used as much as it was 15 years ago. It?s not that bad. You?ll be fine and being able to breathe better is very important, especially as you get older and other things start to compound.

I am having a procedure in a couple of weeks. There is a relatively new procedure that is supposedly painless and just takes a few minutes. No pain afterwards. It is not the balloon and there is no anesthetic required and no pain medicine afterwards. Will let you know when I get it done.

My class at flight school started with 34 students. 14 were found to have deviated septums. Required surgery. They were sent to an AFB for the procedure. They came back later looking like raccoons. Eyes sockets all black and blue. They were too late for my class and were set back a class resulting in my class being extremely small and their class being relatively large. I was pleased to be in a small class. So, for me, deviated septums were a good thing. (;>))
