Bristol crawler help needed

Thanks for the reply. New info
gathered...Perkins diesel... Bristol
crawler

The engine would run away, then he plugged
a hole in the manifold, it hasn't run away since, but it smokes terribly. I need to
know what is wrong. Please help! Refer to previous post for pictures. What model?

Like they said in the previous post check the air filter and air ducting to the engine. Look for leaks. If you have a turbo on it look for leaking seals on the turbo (oil coming from the joint in the middle) if you do preferably don't run it till they are fixed. Could be a real costly mistake if it should happen to run on the oil. Othe wise if those all check out good might be just that worn out or timing could be that far out.

Neighbor has a Cockshutt diesel. It's got a fuel system unlike any I have seen. The throttle lever doesn't go to the injector pump. It goes to the intake manifold, where it appears to be hooked to a throttle plate. Then there's a tube running from the manifold to the injector pump. Apparently "manifold pressure" [vacuum] controls fuel flow? Looks like trouble to me. Is this the kind of system you're talking about?

Yes, I know that. I gave an answer in the earlier post too. He has the vacuum governor system and any leaks will cause the engine to run away. The Cockshutt PD 40 Golden Eagle had the same system on early Perkins 4.270 diesels. Late models used the CAV DPA mechanical governed rotary pump.

The Dexta does not have a P3 engine. The engine was made by Ford at Dagenham and assembled by Perkins. The P3 had chain driven timing gears and a CAV inline injection pump. There were also internal differences. Some parts will interchange with later engines but not the P3.
