Where would a kid have found chains for that tire size to run in the heavy snow?

Let's just say that even as a Yoot', I would have supplied sufficient rear wheel ballast for the conditions.

Dad got miffed at me when I took my little red wagon, mounted a piece of plywood to the rear, removed the motor from his REO reel-type lawn mower and was mounting it on the plywood when he came home from work. I was fashioning a belly blade like the county trucks used to fit under the wagon. Never did solve the rear axle drive pully issue...

I am so jealous. Take note. The illustration shows chain drive and the
restored toy has belt drive. At least it looks that way. What do you think.

When I was a kid , Dad made a 'loader' for to put on my pedal tractor. It was pretend tho: the loader bucket did not actually touch the ground.Mark.

From what I have been able to gather- it appears that originally they were produced using a belt. Then the "new improved" ones used a chain. I don't know if the protective sleeve around the chain is OEM, or an afterthought.

I remember a similar experience from my youth. I took the starter and battery off my Dads truck. Mounted the starter over the back wheel so when I
energized it, the bendix would kick out and hit the rear tire and take off. I fixed the battery right above the pedal area. Dad was amused but not happy.
Had to return and reinstall all parts the following day. Bummer
