I don't like the way my Gator shifts. I can't remember the word the book uses to describe how you should shift, but I think it's clue! Maybe it's "firmly"?

Neighbor's Gator, which his grandsons beat, quit shifting. A retaining ring, or some such blew off the shifter shaft. Turns out JD has an update/fix for it. It was a major amount of work to get to it. [It's a good thing my friend did his own work, or he would have had a fortune into labor on it.] He says it shifts better than ever. I don't know. I know JD hasn't advertised the fix.

Swede: It's a common problem with these machines. Got a family member with one and when it got bad enough to stick in gear we pulled the clutch cover and cleaned and lubed it, which solved the problem. Video below shows the basic procedure. Couple of the bolts are a bit difficult to get to but it's not a hard job overall. Make sure you're getting full travel on the clutch--as they start to bind, the clutch won't fully disengage, causing it to slightly drag, and once it doesn't go back all the way the "slightly dragging" position becomes the "new" "fully disengaged" position, which will keep getting worse and worse until it won't disengage at all, making shifting impossible.

Could it be idling faster than it should ? I would think that would cause it to shift hard.

Thanks for all your replies. Tim, thanks for the video. I will clean and lube the clutch and post back. J D dealer here was no help. Swede
