Ferguson to-30

I?m working on my 1951 Ferguson to-30 front main seal. I see that u can get the main seal and the felt dust seal. Are u supposed to use both or just the seal? I got both but it does not look like there is enough room for both when you torque down the front pulley. There was not a felt dust seal on it when I took it apart so that is why I?m asking.

The rubber seal goes in first, spring side toward the engine. If there is a stop ridge in the cover, set the seal all the way in against the stop, otherwise put it flush with the inside of the cover.

Then the felt seal goes against the rubber seal on the outside. Slide the felt over the pulley hub to prevent fibers from getting pushed into the seal.

But, if there is not enough room, leave the felt out. Don't want it tight, it will get hot and ruin both seals. The seal and felt are aftermarket items, possibly they are not the same thickness as factory seals.

Be sure to oil the seal lip. I put a little silicone under the washer behind the nut to stop oil coming out around the shaft.

No, there was not a felt seal in it when I got the tractor. The cover doesn?t have a lip to stop the rubber seal. So I drove it back to the same spot as the one removed. I ordered a rubber seal from yesterdays tractor yesterday but in the meantime I got one from the parts store. It fits the cover and the pulley very nice. The one I removed was a Victor seal, looks old, but I?m sure an aftermarket. You might be right on the thickness of the felt and the thickness of the rubber seal being thicker. I just did not want to cram the felt in there and maybe even shove the rubber seal out of place. I?ll try and measure the gaps and go from there. I?ll try and take some pictures this weekend and get them posted. Thank you for the help.

WRT the positioning of the new seal, it is often best to mount it a little further in or out if there is much of a groove worn into the surface that the seal runs on. The felt seal is there to protect the rubber seal so if you anticipate running frequently in dust you could always make one from some thinner material in order to have that protection.

I trimmed about 1/16 off from the OD of the felt seal and put the rubber seal about 1/16 from the inner edge and everything together smoothly. Thanks again, Mike
