Antique corn sheller

I had some unpicked sweet corn in the garden that ripened. I have an antique corn sheller I used to shell almost a 5 gallon bucket full, at a leisurely pace it took about an hour. While doing this I wondered who bought this sheller new- when- and was it actually used for livelihood? It made me think of the old tv "Gunsmoke" shows with farmers living in shacks with chickens scavenging around the buildings. Years ago my dad made a mill to grind corn and mix with birdseed which I plan to do with the corn.

Pictures aren't showing.... why not? The sheller is a small hand crank one that clamps to the side of whatever.

Here it is hopefully.

Yep, got one with the name Blackhawk on it.
Helped a young friend fix one several years ago to take back to his home in Panama.
When the natives in the country saw him shelling corn with it, they were amazed.
They had always shelled by hand.

At the tractor show in Temple Tx. they have a bunch of those set up for kids to shell corn.

It's a very popular, hands on experience for them!

Many different designs, some work better than others, but then some are well worn.

I suspect they were used both for home use and livelihood, some were probably power driven.

My dad had a IHC, that stood on it's own legs, and a tray, that held a 5 gal pail of cob corn. We would dump the corn on top, set the same pail under it. and start to crank. I just thought it was for every farm that had a flock of chickens, maybe like a 100 head.

You mention the larger ones. What really busts them up is when you go from a hit and miss to a modern 4cy. engine. A whole lot faster. They mondernized and the later ones were made for a modern engine. Another thing are the ones making cracked corn. Make a load of noise. And then there is always some darn kid that throws a couple of rocks in it so the machine gets broken so he doesn't need to do that chore. You hope he gets is rear end tuned up.
