Spent the last 2 days working at my folks house. Added a lean to on their shed. Took Ernie the 2n over today and when we crunk it up to drive off trailer it made. Terrible noise. It started up so we drove it to it's new home. Shut it off and hit starter button again, more horrible noise. Pulled starter and bendix had come apart. Found the spring and 90% of the retainer clip. Big washer disappeared. Fished around with a magnet on a stick for 30 minutes. It's gotta be in there!

The reason the bell housing is so big is so the starter bendex when it falls apart has room to lay in there and not hurt things. Seen many springs etc. in the bell housing when doing a new clutch and it is very common to have that happen
