Final chapter on the resistor getting hot

Well I finally got er fixed tried 3 different resistors and about 3 coils and finally got one that had the internal resistor put it on with out the resistor and it is working the coil or nothing is getting hot!! Just wanted to say THANK YOU to all that helped me on this problem

Last input from me on it as well. There are no resistors inside your new coil. It is just designed to operate at higher voltage, 14 to 14.5 volts rather than 7 or so. Jim

Thanks for the update. As myself and others indicated before YES you could toss the old 6 volt coil and external ballast and replace it with a coil labeled 12 Volt (NO external ballast required) which will work fine, HOWEVER that doesn't allow for any ballast and ballast by pass when cranking circuit which can improve cold weather starting, although in most situations you will likely be fine. As Jim and myself have pointed out for years and he did below, your new 12 Volt labeled (NO external ballast required) coil more then likely DOES NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL STAND ALONE DISCRETE "RESISTOR" tucked away inside the can. Sure such coils were made and used in some older automobiles, but I never saw one in an old farm tractor.

Best wishes and CONGRATULATIONS

I did the same thing on an Oliver 88 I switched to 12 volt. I originally kept the 6 volt coil and rigged up a resistor and starting bypass system to help with extreme cold weather starting. It worked but points didn't last long, maybe I used the wrong resistor. I finally threw my hands up and threw a 12 volt coil on it and got rid of the resistor. I don't use the tractor in cold weather anyway. That ended the short lived points problem, I haven't touched the points for five years or more. It still pops right off the instant I touch the starter.

Yes there is. The primary windings make up the extra resistance instead of using a separate resistance unit somewhere.

Why the concern with the resistor getting hot? Many are designed to be thermally reactive and work like a sort of variable voltage regulator. My point is - many are supposed to be hot. So hot they can make some smoke if the key is left on without the engine running.
