Machining parts

Another poster ask about machine shops to do some work. Didn't want to hijack that thread.

Someone made a comment about what shops will and wont do anymore. Blaming the shops for something out of their control. Good example is turning rotors and drums. Lot of new vehicles the maker specifies no turning, replace only. In today's sue happy environment a shop doesn't dare touch those. Same kinda thing on other work. Us older guys know that a machinist says "we can try but no guaranties" that's what they meant. Today even if you sign a disclaimer you may still be able to sue. So simple solution is just don't do that "maybe it will work" stuff anymore. And the point is that these people are in fact suing....and winning. Judges are going along with it with the attitude that the shop shouldn't have done "iffy" may work stuff.

Just my observations.

Hi, If there was a start company to make high quality brake rotors,[thick ones] they would see to it he got run out of business!

I'm sure that is a lot of it. But way back many years my local radiator shop started not wanting to repair radiators only recore them. I convinced him to patch it the best he could. This was for an old IHC Scout that was only ran off road. Well that thing held for years !

Hi, I cut the sidewall on a rear tractor tire. Tire shop
wouldn't fix it. I put acouple of conveyor belt
joinerson it to hold it together, then a big boot on
inside lasted 20 yrs. Ed Will

Some things really can not be re-machined any more. Like crankshafts. Most modern engines have a nitrided surface treatment on the journals. Very hard but very, very thin. If you grind the crank you remove that surface treatment and it will not last long compared to the new condition.

Naw this is even on older stuff anymore. We got one shop here that will do about anything but that's an old guy and his son. He's in his 70's. But all the shops run by younger guys? There getting gun shy.

Like I say, just my observations.

They used to do a section repair where they vulcanize a new piece of rubber in there. Had one done several years back. Good chance they are out of business now ?

Yup, and who was liable? YOU, not the tire shop.

It's not only the lawsuits that these places don't want to deal with, it's the *irrational customers* when the "may work" fix doesn't hold up.

Let's say the tire shop patched up your rotten tire same as you did, and it lasted a week instead of 20 years. Didn't hurt anybody, just let go and left you setting in the field...

Who would you blame? Most people would be on the phone to the tire shop, cussing up a blue streak, calling the owner every name in the book for making a poor repair... Even though the owner WARNED you it might not last and you said to go and do it anyway.

Nope, can't be your fault for making the decision. Tire wasn't rotten beyond repair. It was the tire man's incompetence. Irrational.

Can you see why a tire shop would not want to deal with that, not to mention all the bad-mouthing the dissatisfied customer is going to do until the day he dies?

Much better to be bad mouthed for refusing certain jobs because at least some people will understand why, than to be bad mouthed for doing poor work when you were just trying to help a customer in a pinch.

I have a C Case with a vulcanized patch on one of the rear tires that has been there as long as I can remember and I will turn 72 in 2 weeks.
