Found another patch of it in my driveway. Seems he's right. The stuff is showing up only where I've been spraying glyphosphate for a few years.

We get a moss-like stuff growing under the grape rows in the vineyards. Roundup was the product of choice for many years, plus a nice wet, dark environment later in the season. Doesn't seem to cause much trouble there, I now use cover crop instead of weed spray.
