Starter pulled off for the first time possibly since 1957

Hey yall, well I'm tearing into my 57 farmall cub and pulled the original starter off today, I converted the cub to 12v and I think the juice killed the starter but by looking at the innards, it looks like it's done it's time and it's time for a rebuild. Oddly trash came out of the holes where the copper wires are exposed. Taking it to a rebuild shop to see if it can be rebuilt and possibly have it rebuilt. What do yall think by the innards? Shot or could be rebuilt? Thanks yall. Mike

"Oddly trash came out of the holes where the copper wires are exposed"

There should be a steel band around that area sealed with a gasket.

Since it has been open/exposed in that area for who knows how long, it's impossible to say without a complete teardown and

Agree. Here is what it should look like. Ebay. You might want this part too. Also new brushes. Orrrrrrrrr. If the shop looks at it and starts laughing then go back to Ebay. Last year I had one rebuilt in a very good shop for around $80.oo but that covered almost half the unit now is new. He even bead blasts them and paints them.

It is better to rebuild than to replace unless the case is broken, and then sometimes it is feasible to replace the case. I would guess that the new one is made in a far distant land and is not rebuildable. About a year ago I had one rebuilt and the shop owner said laughing, :I was able to save the case". I was pleased and the cost was about $100. This was a good shop, but some shops REPAIR and some REBUILD; there is a difference. Chose the shop carefully.

Got any mechanical ability? Take it apart and visually see if it's an easy fix. If not, find your local generator/alternator/starter rebuild shop and have him look at it. In my case, the guy is so busy and favors the local clientele so much that I came in and took my generator home after a full nine months of it sitting in his shop...the whole time him saying that he would have it fixed "in a week or two".
One of the better chain-store rebuilders (and I use the term "better" with a chuckle here) is Wilson industries. A lot of NAPA stores are affiliated with them. This would be a case where they ship them off and it comes back after a couple of weeks.
