Ignition switch on John Deere 50

Can anyone help me figure out what wire goes where

I see markings on it. Have you taken the old one out? If not label the wires as you disconnect. I've changed at least 2 of those over the years. The configuration you have is the same as those I've changed. ING (far upper right in your photo) is ignition and connects to the coil, just below that to the left is the line to the battery via the ammeter. FL means white rear field light, under the resistor is the red tail light, at the left end of the resistor is the headlights.

I should have added but you probably already know that the resistor is for the headlight dimming function.

Ok no wires coming from the ammeter one wire comes from the generator and one wire goes to the coil the two wires coming from the back light one is red and one is black what one would be the tail light thanks Howard

What is the serial number of the tractor? Gasoline or LP gas, mite as well give us a little info, if you want help, our gracious hosts don't charge by the word, AFAIK.

(Are you sure you want to install a switch from the "Land of Almost Right" that has an ING terminal? LOL!)

"one wire comes from the generator" Sounds like someone re-arranged the wiring !!! Not necessarily wrong electrically but not according to the manual's wiring diagram.

But I digress LOL.

The wire from the generator goes to the switch battery terminal. The two wires from the back light are BOTH for the tail light. The "tail" light is two bulbs - one for white light (field work) and the other for red light (road travel) Seems sensible to connect red wire to red light. (Bob, my John Deere Electrical Systems Service Manual doesn't show any wiring changes based on serial numbers but that doesn't mean there aren't any)

Then follow what I posted before.

Howard, where do you live? Maybe a YT guy lives close and would help you.

That sounds correct. You most likely mean voltage regulator when you mention generator. The Parts Catalog for the 50 tractor shows a voltage regulator used from the very first serial number.

I was wrong in saying that the switch in your photo is the same as the ones I've changed. The ING is supposed to be IGN. The genuine John Deere switches were made by Cole of Boston. Don't know where the aftermarket ones are made. I wonder if Cole still makes the part for JD? I looked at the insides of an original and photographed it. The originals are very substantially made.
