Any of you notice bug repellent does not work anymore

Bad year for bugs. Any of you notice the repellents don't seem to work very long. Even deet. Used to have stuff that would do better but no longer available. Any thoughts.

Most of the time I use baby oil works good last most of the day... I keep a sponge back washer on a stick in a large plastic peanut jar and wipe down every morning...

A few weeks ago, my coworker and I were doing a job outside and the dog p*cker gnats were TERRIBLE.
During lunch hour, he went into Wally World and bought the cheapest vanilla-scented perfume he could find and we had a few hours of relief.
I don't know if the stuff works on other bugs besides gnats, though.

The diesel fuel that I rub on my arms and neck still works well....whenever I have to go into our bush I take a cloth and wet it with diesel and wipe myself down..best mosquito repellant ever made !

We have some eucalyptus bug spray that seems to work pretty well, and we have some Permethrin bug spray for on your clothing only that reduces the tick problem. You can buy clothing already treated with Permethrin, I have some shirts, and they work. When I'm on my tractor I sometimes wear a head net, as repellents don't work very well for the big horse flies we have up north. They can get almost an inch long, my dad used to call them "buzzin bastards"!

The horse bug spray in the black bottle works great. I think it's Absorbine Extra Strength or something. I like the smell. One squirt on a fly and it'll drop right to the ground. I buy that for the horses but if I need any, I use it for myself, too. Don't like putting chemicals on us, but if it's bad, I use it.

If you are bitten by a mosquito, here is a trick my wife learned online. Take a teaspoon and heat in some hot water, as hot as you can stand it, then put it on the bite, and work it around. If I do this a couple of times it takes the pain and itching away for at least a couple of hours

I never had much luck with any of the ones I have tried ! Mosquitos LOVE me ! They always come to me first if in a group of people.

Several stores around stock Repel bug spray. Similar to Off but like 40% deet. Had pretty good luck with it. Doesn't stop flies but mosquitos back up really quick.

Talking about those horse flies. When I was 14 or15 I can remember one of the girls in her stantion going total nuts crazy. Slamming back and forth and bellowing. Walked over to see what the problem was and up on the top of her right flank was the biggest damn horse fly I have ever seen. Huge black thing and it was boring a hole right into her. Blood running down her side and everything. I grabbed the broom used to sweep the mangers and nailed it. If I told you that thing was a good inch long. Poor cow. Dusted her with some antibiotics powder. That hole in her looked like you used a plug cutter.

Some might not agree but evolution comes to mind. Mosquitoes show up with random mutations in their gene makeup that by a long-shot chance makes them more tolerant of DEET (as a specific example). It's actually somewhat of an accident. Those bugs could possibly be (not necessarily though) have an advantage to live to maturity and breed, hence the mutation eventually works its way into the gene pool over generations and then more and more bugs are tolerant. And on and on it goes. Eventually when things get bad enough, a new chemical will show up in the marketplace which starts the whole process over again.

Crazy horse, what you describe is the process called natural selection where a species changes a little because the ones that don't live don't reproduce.

Showcrop, you are spot on correct. I should have included that terminology you mentioned, it's a more
specific reference to what happens. My reference to the theory of evolution is pretty general. Between
Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendell, they had a lot of stuff figured out. I wonder if they ever met?
Probably not even though they were around at the same time I believe.

I guess I'm lucky, because I never seem to have any problems with mosquitoes, even when everyone around me is getting eaten alive by them. I just tell everyone that I'm raising a new crop of them, and have trained them not to bite me....LOL....

About the only things that bug me are the occasional swarm of gnats, but I don't think anything really stops them from flying around you, which is all they really do anyways.

Crazy horse, even though the process of natural selection has caused many species to change a little to adapt to their changing environment, there is no proven case of any species becoming a different one, such as would be the case of an ape becoming a man.

Well, not sure what you mean by "proof" Showcrop. What kind of proof is there for any theory? I suspect
that's why it remains a "theory" and not a "law". So theory of evolution, theory of creation, law of
gravity, Newton's laws, and so on. Galileo had a theory once that said the Earth revolved around the sun
and look where it got him. That one has pretty much been proven to be a fact by now, although the flat
planet fraternity would dispute it. A guy has to make his own mind up as to what he believes and what he
refuses to believe whether it's a theory or a law or anything else.

Yes, and being informed from appropriate best sources helps one to have beliefs that are not too likely to get one in trouble.

WRONG! Apes and humans are the same species, DUH! We are both homosapiens! Geez, Do a little research! Pick up a science book for once! What are you afraid of? You might actually learn something for once!

The stuff in the orange bottle called OFF works for me. I'm outside in the evening for an hour or two and mosquitoes would eat me alive without it.

Lois, Looks like you are the one who needs to pick up a book, LOL. I will give you a hint: The word that you want starts with pr.

Depends on where you are and how determined the mosquitoes are . In manitoba in season you could cover your self from head to foot with good bug spray and it will only last 8 to 10 min --- in the mean time they land on your eye ball. The same bottle of spray will last 2 to 3 hours in florida.

Another brainwashed FOOL! What a surprise! I will give you a hint, the word that you want starts with FU! By the way it's Louis, not Lois!

Homo sapiens are not apes. Apes are primates. There is only one species of homo sapien in existence. The argument could be made that some posters here that show up and in a mere year establish a rock solid reputation as abrasive, foul mouthed morons might well qualify as some sort of primate. But, that would do a great disservice to primates everywhere, so we won't do that.
