Ford 1956 600 won't start

First time in here, so bear with me. I have a Ford tractor that had been running fine, no issues. I changed out the plugs, gapped to .27 and the tractor started and ran for maybe 5 seconds and died. So, I rechecked the plug gap,(OK) still nothing. I am now getting no fire to any of the plugs. I have changed out the Plugs, Plug wires, Points, gapped to .25, distributer dust cover, distributer cap and rotar and the condenser. Still no fire to the plugs. The engine turns over, no problem. I am getting fuel to the plugs just no fire. I am going to order a resister and put that on because that is next up the line. Any Ideas would certainly help. Thanks, Butch

One should ALWAYS trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around
#1 check that when you open the point by hand with say a plastic piece of what ever you have a small spark at the point.
#2 no spark at points try a hot wire from the non-ground side of the battery to the ignition side of the coil and check the points again
#3 your spark needs to be a good blue/white that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#4 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes.

Post back for more help

I checked the points and got no spark. I have not checked with a hot wire fro the battery to the ignition side of the coil. I will also pull the drain plug and check that also. I know that the plugs are very wet with gas after attempting to start the tractor.

Friend of mine had same issue, it was the points. Filed them really good. Hate to say but we used a finger nail file. Then a paper business card. They were brand new!!!!! Got to clean em.

Our friend filed his new points. Just not good enough. A good clean $20 bill works good to clean the filings off. 1s and 5s are dirty. Lol. Post back let us know.

Wet plugs are fouled plugs so you need to use a torch or lighter to dry them off and burn off the gas. If you got cheap new points good chance they have a coating on them so you will nto get a spark from them till it is cleaned off

Ok, I will clean the plugs off tonight with a lighter, I got the points from Yesterday's Tractor, but didn't clean them off. I will do that tonight also.
Thank you for all this help.
Been along time since I have messed with points...

Thank you

Butch

Another simple way of checking if the points are clean like they need to be is use a hot wire and have the points closed. When you touch the wire to the coil on and off a couple times you should see a spark. I use that test a lot when trouble shooting a spark problem

I have also found the best spark plugs to use now days are the NGK3112 in my Fords.

That test is a simple test and takes no real tool to do and so simple even a cave man can do it and get it right LOL. I've used it so many times I cannot even think about how high the count is

Before you throw parts, trouble shoot first.
I recently replaced points and condenser on Jubilee and no spark.

Full 12v to + on coil. That told me resistor was good, new points weren't making contact when they were closed. I confirmed using ohmmeter. Points may have picked up dirt from nee feeler guage or points were oxidized.

A little Emery cloth on points and points made contact. I set flywheel on timing mark. Slowly rotate distributor until points opened. Locked distributor. Checked with timing light. Timing spot on

I didn't need more parts, just clean points.

50 years ago it was common replaced points and condenser annually.

Please don't file them. They do/are supposed to have a metallic coating that you will remove and they won't last very long. Try a folded piece of a brown paper shopping bag a couple of times instead (with the points closed). Make sure the points close properly and are aligned with each other. Also check that the wire from the condenser is clear and not grounding. HTH

You might want to make sure the wire going into the distributor isn't grounding through the rubber grommet. If it grounds out anywhere between the coil and points you won't have any spark.

Well, I am back finally. After rechecking everthing a getting the points to about the gap of a match book cover, it ran and it ran like a champ. Went out and swapped out bushhogs and cut for about three hours. Brought it back up the shop and parked it for the night. Just before heading back into the house, I wanted to hear it one more time. Click, Click, Click was all I got. The clicking was coming from the solenoid. It had a 4 post solenoid on it but the book called for a 3 post solenoid. So I put one of those on. Now I have nothing, no click or anythng. Going to try and jump across the solenoid tonight when I get home. But if any one has any ideas I would be happy to hear them. The battery has 13.5 volts so I know it is not that. The tractor had a 12 volt conversion kit put on it before I got it.
Thanks in advance for all your help.
By the way, everything is new from the plugs to the resistor.
