Tractor Shop Siding

When I originally walled in a pole barn to make a shop I used wafer-board on the open side for the exterior wall and painted the heck out of it. Unfortunately it soaked from the bottom up and is starting to rot from there. I have sided it with galvanized, corrugated roofing. I want to caulk the bottom edge at the cement and where sheets meet wood but I thought I'd get your opinions on what to use. I once had a auto-body shop tell me never to use silicone caulk on car metal because it would corrode it w/i a year. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,,,, gm

I don't know about car metals, but have never heard anything like what your body shop told you.

I've used silicone caulk on steel roofing/siding for many years with no problems. This included both painted and galvanized sheets. Have also used on HVAC ductwork, both galvanized and aluminum....although I prefer to use aluminum HVAC tape when possible (for covering nail/screw holes).

...Just can't figure why an auto body shop would say such a thing, unless they're looking at the silicone as a scab fix as opposed to a proper fix. ...Just don't know.

How far up is it rotted/ coming apart ? My plywood on my garage was rotted along the concrete and stone in the front. I cut all of it out and used marine grade plywood up 2 feet. I covered smeared the seam between the concrete and plywood with roof tar, then covered it with ice and water shield. If you want to caulk there is roof tar in caulk tubes. nnalert makes a great product. If you make sure everything is nice and clean the tar base caulk should work fine.

My brother-in-law works for a auto restoration shop and they refuse all paint jobs if the customer acknowledges using any silicone containing products on the vehicle to be painted.
This includes Armorall on tires or vinyl and any type of liquid "wax" on the existing paint.

For sealing the lower edge of the corrugated siding, what about the rubber/foam closure strips ?

kmc.MN silicone will cause adhesion issues with the paint. The first dealership I worked at had one of the best paint guys I have ever met. If you opened anything that contained silicone in the shop he would NOT paint that day.

Urethane door and window sealant will stick, and not react. No acid. no failure. Smells for 3 days, cures to touch in one day. Jim

(quoted from post at 19:14:05 07/03/19) kmc.MN silicone will cause adhesion issues with the paint.

Thanks for the reminder JDS. I don't tend to think much about paint jobs, what with 20+ miles of gravel roads and all the Winter salt. And then like today, when I tend to just not think. *lol*

Do some googling and see what the experts have to say about silicon and metal corrosion. After doing that myself and reading several articles, I would say that "maybe" the concern might relate back to early versions of silicon sealant but probably no longer. Plus, there are countless types of silicon sealant on the market as well. We might be dealing with an old-wives tale here about corroding metal with today's sealants. I have no personal knowledge on the subject and I tend to not use the stuff, I find it messy to work with and eventually gathers dirt and discolors.
