If they had turned the second tractor around they could have gotten 4 tractors on there instead of only 3. While blocking the tires is required on machines such as that, it is all nonsense. If the chains will not hold it, those will not stop it from rolling off if it comes loose. More than likely will be bounced out from the tire and along the road someplace.

Single axle tractor, possibly the fellow knew more about his truck than you. Blocking in some cases is spiked down. Possibly just blocked while loading before chains. I have seen temporary blocking while loading as safety.

The chuck blocks were nailed down to the bed of the trailer or RR cars with 16P duplex nails. It took a 4' knuckle head bar to pull the blocks loose. BTDT a lot in my earlier years at our dealership-------Loren

Quite often 3/16--7/32" wire was used rather than chains to fasten down tractors and equipment to trucks and RR cars. Sever strands were threaded through the tractor or implement frames at several locations and then they were twisted tight with a bar.-----Loren

Nice historic photo, wonder if I've seen any of em at tractor shows. Can't tell about the road tractor, looks to be a Ford?
