Super C Zenith carb draining question

Based on people s advice, I tried to measure how much fuel drains out of my Zenith carbs drain port in one minute.

I found the drain plug, based on my manual, and opened the port by removing the plug. Gas immediately poured out, soaking my hands, and before I could get a glass jar underneath to catch the gas, the stream got much weaker. The gas was lightly flowing out of the port and the rest of it was running along the outside of the carb and dripping other places, which means I could not really catch it in the glass jar.

What did I do wrong? The drain port is on a tough spot to catch the gas flowing out.

I tried driving my tractor again today, and it worked well on flat ground, even in 3rd gear full throttle. However, it sputtered a little bit going into 3rd gear from a standstill, and it completely stalled out while climbing a hill in 1st gear.

Remove the gas line from the carb.. Turn on the gas and catch it in a jar. How much did you get in a minute? In should run freely. Now attach it to the carb. and do the same test. The level in the bowl has to go down before the inlet needle valve will allow more gas into the carb. This opening is not very large at all. Do not expect to get as much gas into your jar as quickly as before. The level of the float will determine how far open the needle valve will open. I recommend that you try to adjust the main metering valve adjustment screw. My 9n ford has an adjustment on the top and front of the carb that determines how much fuel it is going to get. My 9n has the float level adjusted the way the book said to do it, but the gas does not pour out of the drain very fast. IT runs well, but the throttle response is not correct and so I may need to re adjust the float. I am not sure yet. This adjustment will help it run smoother, the closer to the correct setting that you adjust it to. I believe that my C and my 400 have the same adjustments. I have not looked at them in years.

Thank you.

A different question, the fuel screen in the elbow attachment at the carburetors inlet seemed to be missing when I unscrewed the elbow attachment from the carburetor at the inlet hole. Is that a problem?

Thanks,

John

You learned three things. Loosen the plug, get the can ready, then take it out. You also learned
that a lot of fuel comes out at first, then less. Also good if the lesser flow will do a pint a
minute. not good if dribbly). Three, you learned that your shoes soak up gasoline.

Some Zenith Carbs have an adjusting screw near the bottom front, others have just a plug there. if
yours has a t shaped screw, turn it looser CCW looking from the front one quarter turn at a time
while testing the engine power. if it does not have the screw, and other remedies are not
successful, including cleaning out the gas tank, then you might need to put in one size larger main
jet. Don't do that until nothing else works. Jim

There is usually a 2 piece connector. The screen is in the piece away from the carb. If not there,
no big deal. But it can allow junk and rust to get to the needle and seat. Look up how a carb
works. It is interesting, and will put you to sleep better than running 5 miles. Jim
