Ground hogs

I was mowing hay last evening. About 5 minutes after I snapped these photos, I ran thru a ground hog mound. It pulled the tractor rpms way down. And I am wondering if anything bad happened to the mower drive train or drive shaft? These discbines do twist the drive shaft easily. So, I am a little worried.

If your discbine died because of a ground hog mound it was going bad long before that. Now if you were chewing on a big limestone rock ledge that would be different. Tom

I would guess not bad for machine also. You will find out soon enough if it is hurt. You need to carry a shovel and half a dozen of these in a sealed one gallon ziplock bag. Moisture effects them. Nice big bad groundhog bombs. Shut the tractor down and fill in all of the holes but one. Get on your hands and knees, lite the fuse, and shove it way down the hole. Start shoveling really quick. You actually hear the smoke bomb going off in the tunnel. You don't want any white smoke leaking out anywhere. They work great if all of the hogs are in the tunnels and not across the field somewhere. Cost around $5.oo ea. W

When I drive past the feed store/garden center, I pick up $20.oo worth now and then. Have a decent supply and you never know when some do gooder will ban them.

4020 powershift. Was in 5th gear. The discbine had the drive shaft replaced right before I bought it. It appears the PTO input shaft where the main PTO connects to the gear box has a twist in it. That has been there since I bought it. I have no clue how the previous owner could have twisted up things that bad, but I am thinking a high HP tractor, running it hard and hitting obstacles. Or, hitting a lot of ground hog mounds? Normally I see them and raise up some. Not this time.

If you hit an obstruction such as groundhog mound that pulls engine rpm's way down then I suggest you check slip clutch to be sure it's not STUCK.

This^^

There are directions for testing/setting the slip clutch in the operators manual
