I wasn't going to post another Snowplow Sunday, as most parts of the country are now without snow. However, just ran across this pic and couldn't resist sharing!!

I posted these in tales a few days ago
but will add them here today. These are
pictures of Colorado DOT trying to clear
snow from avalanches in Red Mountain Pass
on The Million Dollar Highway (550)
between Silverton and Ouray. You can see
avalanche debris in the snow. I don't
know if the road is open yet.

There is a memorial on the highway for those that have lost their lives to maintain it.

(quoted from post at 04:16:07 03/24/19) I'm surprised OSHA regulations allow workers between those snow banks,if it was dirt they'd need to have the sides re enforced some way.

Those sides are reinforced. They always say that when an avalanche comes to a stop that the snow is like concrete. Anyone caught in one is lucky to be able to get a breath let alone move an arm or leg. So that snow is not going anywhere until it melts.

It?s been melting here off and on for over a week. Picture is from yesterday, gravel parking lot at a favorite cross country ski area. Highest snow bank or pile I found so I could show off to my cousin who lives where they get way more snow than at my place. Still plenty of snow here.

IIRC snow heats up from friction during
an avalanche and when it stops it freezes
hard.

Nope. not yet. Estimated 2 to 3 weeks. My niece drives a snow plow for the county. But not up there. But she wants to!

So what I'm hearing is, ya'll [b:1563912e7a][i:1563912e7a]don't want[/i:1563912e7a][/b:1563912e7a] Snowplow Sunday to end just yet???

...Or maybe it's that the folks who wrote in are simply trying to find out whose is bigger. *lol* Oh c'mon, get your head out of the compost pile -- I'm talking snow piles here!

If the general consensus wants, will keep Snowplow Sunday going until April, then will switch to Spring Is Here. Still got LOTS of winter pics I haven't used yet.

SMS. that is correct. I learned at snowmobile trail grooming school, that given the right temperature, and the correct amount of snow in the grooming drag, that the snow "rolls" producing friction and a little heat, and thus a little melting. Within a half hour of the groomer passing the snow will be set up and hard.
